SC
Samsung Washing Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
The SC error means your Samsung washer is draining too slowly. Water is not leaving the drum fast enough. This is usually a clog in the drain filter or drain hose.
Affected Models
- WF45R6100AW
- WF50R8500AV
- WF42H5000AW
- Most Samsung front-load washers
Common Causes
- Clogged drain pump filter (lint, coins, or debris blocking flow)
- Kinked or crushed drain hose behind the washer
- Drain hose installed too deep into the standpipe (creates a siphon effect)
- Faulty drain pump motor not spinning properly
- Foreign object lodged inside the drain pump impeller
How to Fix It
-
Unplug the washer before doing anything.
Safety first — always disconnect power before accessing internal parts.
-
Locate the drain pump filter on the front lower panel.
There is a small access door at the bottom-front of the machine. Place a towel down — water will spill out.
-
Slowly unscrew the filter cap and let the water drain into a shallow tray.
Turn it counterclockwise. Pull the filter all the way out and rinse it under the tap.
-
Check the drain hose at the back of the washer.
Make sure it is not kinked, crushed, or pushed too far into the standpipe. The hose should enter the pipe no more than 6 inches deep.
-
Plug the washer back in and run a Rinse + Spin cycle to test.
If the SC code clears, you are done. If it returns, the drain pump likely needs replacing.
When to Call a Professional
If cleaning the filter and hose doesn't clear the SC error, the drain pump itself may be failing. A technician can test and replace the pump in about an hour. Expect repair costs of $120–$200 including parts and labor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the SC error the same as the 5E error on Samsung washers?
They are closely related but not identical. The 5E error means the washer failed to drain at all. The SC error specifically means drainage is happening but too slowly. Both usually point to the same fix: clean the drain filter.
How often should I clean the Samsung washer drain filter?
Samsung recommends cleaning it every 2 months under normal use. If you wash heavily soiled loads or pet bedding, clean it monthly. A clogged filter is the number one cause of drain errors.
Can I run a load of laundry with the SC error showing?
It is not recommended. The washer may leave your clothes sitting in dirty water. Fix the drainage issue first, then resume washing.
