Sud

Samsung Washing Machine

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The Sud error means there are too many suds inside your washer. The machine pauses the cycle to let the foam settle. This is almost always caused by using too much detergent or the wrong type.

Affected Models

  • WF45R6100AW
  • WF50R8500AV
  • WF45T6000AW
  • All Samsung front-load washers
  • Most Samsung top-load HE washers

Common Causes

  • Using too much detergent for the load size
  • Using regular detergent instead of HE (High Efficiency) detergent
  • Detergent buildup inside the drum from previous washes
  • The drain pump or drain filter is partially clogged, trapping old soap
  • Soft water in your area makes detergent foam more than usual

How to Fix It

  1. Wait 10–15 minutes for the suds to settle naturally.

The washer will usually resume the cycle on its own once the foam level drops.

  2. If the washer doesn't resume, run a Rinse + Spin cycle with no detergent.

This flushes the excess suds out of the machine.

  3. Clean the drain filter at the bottom front of the washer.

Open the small access panel. Place towels underneath. Unscrew the filter and remove any debris or soap buildup.

  4. Run an empty wash cycle on the hottest setting with no detergent.

This cleans out any detergent residue inside the drum and hoses. Some Samsung models have a dedicated Self Clean cycle.

  5. For future washes, use only HE detergent and reduce the amount.

Most HE washers need just 1–2 tablespoons of detergent per load. More is not better.

When to Call a Professional

The Sud error rarely needs a professional. If it keeps appearing even with correct detergent amounts, check the drain filter. A clogged drain system can trap old soap and cause recurring suds. A technician can deep-clean the drain for $80–$150.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of detergent should I use in my Samsung washer?

Always use HE (High Efficiency) detergent. Look for the HE symbol on the bottle. Regular detergent creates way too many suds for modern washers. This is the number one cause of the Sud error.

How much detergent should I use?

Most loads need only 1–2 tablespoons of HE detergent. For small loads, use even less. The measuring cap on the bottle is often way too large. When in doubt, use less — your clothes will still get clean.

Why does my Samsung washer keep showing the Sud error?

You're likely using too much detergent, or there's old soap buildup inside. Run an empty hot wash cycle to clean the drum. Also clean the drain filter. Then reduce your detergent amount going forward.
