F26

Whirlpool Dishwasher

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

F26 means your Whirlpool dishwasher has detected a problem with the door latch. The dishwasher will not start or will stop mid-cycle if it cannot confirm the door is securely closed and latched. This is a safety feature — running with an unlatched door would cause water to flood your kitchen. The fix is usually a latch adjustment or replacement.

Affected Models

  • WDT730PAHZ
  • WDF520PADM
  • WDT970SAHZ
  • WDTA50SAHZ
  • Whirlpool built-in dishwashers 2008 and newer

Common Causes

  • Worn or broken door latch mechanism that no longer engages the strike plate firmly
  • Misaligned door caused by a loose hinge or warped tub opening
  • Broken door latch micro-switch that is not sending a 'door closed' signal to the control board
  • Dish rack or oversized item inside pushing the door slightly open during the cycle
  • Damaged door strike plate on the dishwasher tub frame preventing full latch engagement

How to Fix It

  1. Open and close the dishwasher door firmly and listen for a definitive 'click' as the latch engages. If you hear a weak click or no click, the latch or strike plate is worn.

Also check that nothing inside the dishwasher (a tall pot, protruding utensil) is preventing the door from closing fully.

  2. Inspect the door latch assembly on the inside top of the door. Look for visible cracks or broken plastic tabs. Try the latch handle or button mechanism to see if it moves freely.

On most models the latch handle is at the top center of the door. If it feels loose or floppy, the latch mechanism has worn out.

  3. Inspect the strike plate on the top of the dishwasher tub frame. This is the metal or plastic bracket that the latch hook grabs. Look for wear marks, cracks, or misalignment.

Sometimes the strike plate can be adjusted by loosening its mounting screws, shifting it into alignment, and retightening.

  4. Check the door hinges for looseness or damage. A loose hinge lets the door sag, which misaligns the latch and strike plate. Tighten the hinge mounting screws if they are loose.

Hinge screws are usually accessible inside the door opening at the bottom corners.

  5. Replace the door latch assembly if it is cracked, worn, or the switch inside it does not click cleanly. Order the part by model number. Access the latch by removing the inner door panel screws.

After replacing the latch, close the door and confirm a firm click before running a cycle.

When to Call a Professional

Door latch replacement is a straightforward DIY repair on most Whirlpool dishwashers. The latch assembly is accessible from the inside of the door panel. Parts cost $15 to $50 depending on the model. A technician will charge $75 to $175 for the full repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

The door seems to close fine — why is F26 showing?

The door latch has a micro-switch inside it that must physically activate to tell the control board the door is closed. You can close the door and it can feel latched, but if the micro-switch inside has failed it will still trigger F26. Test the switch with a multimeter if the latch appears physically intact.

Could F26 be a wiring issue?

Yes. The wire from the door latch switch runs through the door hinge area. Opening and closing the door thousands of times can flex and eventually break this wire. If the latch and switch are fine, trace the wiring from the switch to the control board for breaks.

Is F26 covered under Whirlpool's warranty?

If your dishwasher is within the 1-year limited warranty and the latch failed due to a manufacturing defect, Whirlpool will cover it. Normal wear on older machines is not covered. For a dishwasher 3 or more years old, expect to pay for the latch replacement.
