FD
Whirlpool Dishwasher
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Whirlpool dishwasher error FD means the detergent dispenser is not opening or functioning correctly during the wash cycle. If the dispenser does not open, detergent never reaches your dishes and they come out dirty. This is usually caused by a physical blockage or a failed dispenser mechanism.
Affected Models
- WDT730PAHZ
- WDT780SAEM
- WDT970SAKZ
- WDF520PADM
- WDTA50SAHZ
Common Causes
- Detergent residue has hardened around the dispenser door and is preventing it from opening
- A dish or utensil in the lower rack is blocking the dispenser door from swinging open
- The dispenser solenoid or wax motor that opens the door has failed
- The dispenser door spring is broken and the door can no longer pop open on its own
- A wiring connector to the dispenser actuator has come loose
How to Fix It
-
Open the dishwasher door and inspect the detergent dispenser for dried detergent residue around the latch and door edges.
Hard detergent buildup can physically prevent the dispenser door from popping open. Clean it with a damp cloth or soft brush.
-
Load a cycle and pay attention to how items are positioned in the lower rack.
A tall pot, a cutting board, or a large pan standing upright can block the detergent dispenser door from opening. Rearrange loading so nothing is in front of the dispenser.
-
Manually test the dispenser door. With the dishwasher door open, press the dispenser latch and see if the dispenser door flips open freely.
If the door snaps open with a good spring action, the mechanical side is fine. If it is stiff, sticks, or does not open, the spring or latch needs attention.
-
Run a rinse-only cycle and listen for a click from the dispenser at the expected time — usually about 10 to 12 minutes into the main wash.
If you hear a click but the door did not open, the solenoid is trying to work but the door is stuck. Clean more thoroughly around the door edges.
-
If no click is heard and the dispenser does not open, the solenoid or wax motor has failed. The entire dispenser assembly typically needs replacement.
The dispenser is mounted in the inner door panel and held by a few screws. Replacement usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.
When to Call a Professional
Cleaning the dispenser and adjusting rack loading is free and fixes many FD errors. A replacement dispenser assembly costs $20 to $50. Professional dispenser replacement including labor typically costs $80 to $150.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the type of detergent I use cause FD?
Yes — powder detergent can clump and harden inside the dispenser if exposed to steam from the pre-wash, jamming the door shut. Pods are less likely to cause this issue than powder. If you use powder, make sure the dispenser is completely dry and clean before loading it, and use the dishwasher promptly after loading.
What happens to my dishes if the dispenser does not open?
Your dishes come out unclean. The pre-wash cycle uses hot water only — the main wash cycle relies entirely on the detergent releasing from the dispenser. Without detergent, grease and food soil is not broken down and you will see film and residue on dishes.
Can I put detergent directly in the bottom of the dishwasher to avoid FD temporarily?
Yes — placing detergent in the bottom of the tub before starting a cycle will allow it to dissolve in the pre-wash. This is a workable short-term fix while you repair the dispenser. Note that this is less efficient than proper timed dispensing, but it will get your dishes clean.
