AD

Whirlpool Refrigerator

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The AD error on a Whirlpool refrigerator stands for Automatic Defrost. It means the refrigerator is in the middle of a scheduled defrost cycle. This is completely normal — the fridge runs a defrost cycle every 8–12 hours to melt frost off the evaporator coils.

Affected Models

  • WRS325SDHZ
  • WRF535SWHZ
  • WRB322DMBM
  • WRS571CIHZ
  • Most Whirlpool French door and side-by-side models

Common Causes

  • The refrigerator has entered a scheduled automatic defrost cycle — this is normal
  • A manual defrost was accidentally triggered from the control panel
  • The defrost timer or control board initiated an extra defrost cycle due to heavy frost buildup
  • A power outage caused the defrost schedule to reset and trigger an immediate cycle
  • The defrost heater is running longer than usual due to heavy frost on the evaporator coils

How to Fix It

  1. Do nothing — AD means your refrigerator is working correctly.

The defrost cycle typically lasts 20–30 minutes. The AD display will disappear when it finishes.

  2. Avoid opening the refrigerator and freezer doors frequently during a defrost cycle.

Opening doors during defrost lets warm air in and makes the cycle take longer.

  3. If you want the cycle to end sooner, press the Power button to cancel the defrost mode.

On most Whirlpool models, pressing the Power Freeze or Power Cool button will also cancel an active defrost.

  4. Once AD clears, confirm the freezer temperature returns to 0°F (-18°C) within 30 minutes.

It is normal for temperature to rise slightly during defrost. It should recover quickly.

  5. If AD appears more than 3 times per day or lasts more than 45 minutes, contact a technician.

This suggests the defrost control or heater is stuck on, which can warm up the freezer and spoil food.

When to Call a Professional

The AD code by itself is not a problem — it is normal. However, if AD appears very frequently (more than every few hours) or stays on for more than 45 minutes, there may be a fault with the defrost timer or heater. In that case, contact a Whirlpool-certified technician. Excessive defrost cycles can cause temperature fluctuations and food spoilage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I be worried when AD shows on my Whirlpool fridge?

Not at all — AD is one of the few display codes that means everything is working as designed. Your fridge automatically melts frost off the evaporator coils every 8–12 hours. Without this cycle, frost would build up and eventually block airflow, reducing cooling performance.

How long does the AD defrost cycle last on a Whirlpool refrigerator?

A normal defrost cycle lasts 20–40 minutes depending on how much frost has accumulated. If the cycle regularly lasts longer than 45 minutes, there may be a problem with the defrost heater running too long. In that case, the defrost termination thermostat may need replacement.

Will my food spoil during the AD defrost cycle?

No — the temperature change during a defrost cycle is small and brief. The freezer may warm from 0°F to around 35°F during defrost, but returns to 0°F quickly after. Your food will not spoil from a normal defrost cycle. Only extended or repeated defrost cycles lasting hours could put food at risk.
