F21

Whirlpool Washing Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The F21 error means your Whirlpool washer is draining too slowly. The water couldn't leave the drum within the allowed time. This usually points to a clog in the pump or drain hose.

Affected Models

  • WFW5620HW
  • WFW6620HW
  • WFW9620HC
  • Most Whirlpool Duet front-load washers

Common Causes

  • Clogged drain pump filter packed with lint or debris
  • Blocked or kinked drain hose at the back of the washer
  • Small objects (coins, hair pins, buttons) stuck in the pump
  • Drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe creating a siphon
  • Failing drain pump motor running too slowly

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the washer and unplug it from the wall.

Water may still be in the drum — have towels and a shallow pan ready.

  2. Find the drain pump filter access panel at the bottom-front of the washer.

It's usually behind a small rectangular door. Have a pan underneath to catch water.

  3. Slowly unscrew the filter cap and let the water drain into the pan.

Remove all debris — lint, coins, small objects — from inside the filter housing.

  4. Rinse the filter under the tap and screw it back in firmly.

A loose cap will cause leaks. Tighten until snug.

  5. Check the drain hose for kinks and make sure it's not pushed more than 6–8 inches into the standpipe.

Run a drain and spin cycle to test. You should hear the pump running.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the filter and clearing the hose doesn't fix it — the drain pump is likely failing. Pump replacement costs $120–$250 with labor. Contact Whirlpool support or a qualified appliance technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean my Whirlpool washer drain filter?

Whirlpool recommends cleaning the pump filter every 1–3 months. If you wash a lot of towels, pet bedding, or heavily soiled items — clean it monthly. A clogged filter is the most common cause of F21.

Can I use my Whirlpool washer if it shows F21?

No — the drum still has water in it. Do not restart the washer until the drain is cleared. Open the pump filter access and manually drain the water first.

What size pan do I need to drain a Whirlpool washer manually?

A shallow baking pan or roasting tray works well. You'll likely need to empty it multiple times. A large front-load washer drum can hold 15–20 gallons of water.
