F36

Whirlpool Washing Machine

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Error code F36 on a Whirlpool washer is a reminder that the washer's drum or tub needs to be cleaned. Whirlpool front-loaders track the number of cycles run and display F36 as a maintenance alert after a set number of washes. A dirty drum builds up detergent residue, mold, and odors over time. This is not a mechanical failure — it is a maintenance reminder. Run the Clean Washer cycle with an appropriate washer cleaner to clear the code.

Affected Models

  • Whirlpool Front-Load Washers
  • Whirlpool Duet series
  • Whirlpool WFW series with Clean Washer cycle

Common Causes

  • The washer has reached the set number of cycles without a Clean Washer cycle being run
  • Using too much detergent causing residue buildup that triggers the reminder sooner
  • Using non-HE detergent in an HE washer, which creates excess suds and residue
  • A soft water supply accelerating soap scum buildup inside the tub
  • Skipping cleaning cycles repeatedly which advances the alert counter faster on some models

How to Fix It

  1. Run the Clean Washer cycle. Select the 'Clean Washer' cycle on the control dial or panel. Add one tablet of Affresh Washer Cleaner (or one cup of liquid chlorine bleach) to the drum — do not add regular detergent.

Affresh is Whirlpool's recommended washer cleaner and is available at hardware and grocery stores. Do not put the cleaner in the dispenser drawer — place it directly in the drum.

  2. Allow the Clean Washer cycle to run completely. The cycle takes approximately 60-90 minutes. Do not interrupt it or open the door. The high-temperature wash and extended rinse are what clean the drum effectively.

If you hear what sounds like a lot of water sloshing — that is normal. The Clean Washer cycle uses more water than a standard cycle.

  3. After the cycle completes, wipe down the inside of the door seal (boot gasket) with a damp cloth. Mold and mildew commonly build up in the folds of the rubber seal. Pull back the folds of the seal and clean inside them.

This is the area that causes most of the musty smell in front-load washers. Clean it monthly.

  4. Leave the washer door ajar between uses. This allows air to circulate inside the drum and prevents mold growth in the door seal and tub. This simple habit reduces the frequency of cleaning needed.

Also leave the detergent dispenser drawer slightly open to allow it to dry between uses.

  5. If F36 returns very quickly after running the Clean Washer cycle, you may be using too much detergent or non-HE detergent. Switch to HE detergent and use the recommended amount — which is usually much less than you think.

HE washers need only 1-2 tablespoons of HE detergent per load. More detergent does not clean better — it just leaves more residue.

When to Call a Professional

F36 is a maintenance alert, not a mechanical failure. You do not need a technician for this — just run a Clean Washer cycle. If the code does not clear after running the cycle, the cycle may not have completed correctly. Check that the washer is draining fully and that you used the correct cleaner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I run the Clean Washer cycle?

Whirlpool recommends running the Clean Washer cycle at least once a month. If you do heavy laundry — many loads per week, lots of pet bedding, or sweaty workout clothes — run it every 2-3 weeks. Regular cleaning prevents the buildup that causes F36 to appear and also keeps your washer smelling fresh.

Why does my front-load washer smell bad?

Moisture trapped inside the drum, door seal, and detergent drawer creates the perfect environment for mold and mildew to grow. This is the most common complaint about front-load washers. The fix is simple: run monthly Clean Washer cycles, wipe the door seal after each wash, leave the door ajar between uses, and use the correct amount of HE detergent.

Can I use bleach instead of Affresh to clear F36?

Yes — one cup of liquid chlorine bleach added directly to the drum works well for the Clean Washer cycle. Do not mix bleach with Affresh or any other cleaner. Run plain hot water after the bleach cycle if the smell bothers you. Affresh is gentler and also deodorizes, which is why Whirlpool recommends it.
