App Crashing
Meta VR Headset
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Meta Quest app crashing is usually caused by a corrupted game install, not enough free storage, or a firmware incompatibility introduced by a recent update. Uninstall and reinstall the app — this fixes the majority of crash issues.
Affected Models
- Meta Quest 2
- Meta Quest 3
- Meta Quest 3S
- Meta Quest Pro
Common Causes
- Corrupted game data from an interrupted install or update
- Insufficient free storage — apps need working space beyond their install size
- Firmware incompatibility after a system update changed API behavior
- App not yet updated to support the latest Quest OS version
- Overheating causing the system to terminate apps to protect hardware
How to Fix It
-
Restart the Quest headset.
Press the power button, select Restart, and let the headset fully reboot. Many crashes are caused by temporary memory issues that a restart clears. Test the app again after the restart.
-
Uninstall and reinstall the app.
Go to the App Library, hold the app icon, select Uninstall, and confirm. Then reinstall from the Meta Store. This replaces any corrupted game files and is the most effective fix for persistent crashes in a single app.
-
Check available storage.
Go to Settings > Storage. If less than 2–3GB is free, games may crash when they cannot allocate working space. Delete unused apps to free storage before reinstalling the crashing app.
-
Update the app.
Open the Meta Store, search for the app, and check if an update is available. App updates often include crash fixes for compatibility with new Quest OS versions. Enable automatic updates in the Store settings so apps stay current.
-
Check for overheating.
Quest 2 and 3 can overheat during long sessions, especially in warm rooms. If the headset feels very hot, the thermal throttle will kill demanding apps. Take a 15-minute break, improve room ventilation, and avoid blocking the headset's ventilation slots with hands or hair.
When to Call a Professional
If multiple apps crash and a factory reset does not resolve it, the system storage may be corrupted. Contact Meta support.
