Audio Not Working

Meta Quest VR Headset

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Meta Quest audio problems are most often caused by the volume being turned down via the volume buttons, a Bluetooth audio device connected and taking over output, or a specific app audio setting. Check the volume with the side buttons and disconnect any Bluetooth headsets.

Affected Models

  • Meta Quest 2
  • Meta Quest 3
  • Meta Quest 3S
  • Meta Quest Pro

Common Causes

  • Volume turned all the way down using the headset volume buttons
  • Bluetooth headphones connected — routing audio away from the built-in speakers
  • Audio output set to a specific device in Settings
  • Specific game or app has its own volume set to zero
  • Software glitch causing audio service to crash — clears on restart
  • Headset hardware speaker fault (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Press the volume up button on the side of the headset.

The volume buttons are on the right side of the headset, below the power button (Quest 2) or on the bottom edge (Quest 3). Press the top button to increase volume. A volume indicator will appear in the headset — ensure it is above zero.

  2. Check for connected Bluetooth audio devices.

Go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth. If any headphones or speakers are connected, disconnect them. The Meta Quest will route all audio to connected Bluetooth devices, leaving the built-in speakers silent.

  3. Check the in-app volume settings.

Many VR games have their own internal volume controls separate from the system volume. Check the in-game settings menu for audio/volume options. Some apps reset their audio settings after an update.

  4. Restart the headset.

Hold the power button for 3-5 seconds and select Restart. An audio service crash — where the sound system freezes — is cleared by a restart. This is more common after the headset wakes from sleep.

  5. Check audio output settings.

Go to Settings > Device > Audio and confirm the output is set to Headset Speakers (or your preferred device). If an audio output that is no longer connected is still selected, sound will not play from the speakers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Meta Quest only have audio in one ear?

Single-sided audio is usually caused by a Bluetooth audio device with only one earbud active, or a specific app routing audio in mono to one channel. Disconnect Bluetooth devices and test with the built-in speakers. If the built-in speaker on one side is silent, the hardware may have a fault — contact Meta support.

Can I use AirPods with Meta Quest?

Yes — AirPods can be paired via Bluetooth in Settings > Devices > Bluetooth. Meta Quest supports standard Bluetooth audio. Note that Bluetooth audio has a slight latency delay, which can cause audio to feel out of sync with fast-moving VR content.
