Black Screen
Meta VR Headset
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A black screen on Meta Quest usually means the headset is in sleep mode, has a dead battery, or the display has crashed. Hold the power button for 10–15 seconds to force a restart — this fixes the vast majority of cases.
Affected Models
- Meta Quest 2
- Meta Quest 3
- Meta Quest 3S
- Meta Quest Pro
Common Causes
- Headset in sleep mode — proximity sensor triggered by the face gasket or carrying case
- Battery fully drained
- Software crash leaving the display off
- Faulty display or display cable (rare, usually after a drop)
- Stuck on boot — firmware issue
How to Fix It
-
Press the power button once and put the headset on.
The proximity sensor on the inside of the headset wakes it when worn. Sometimes it just went to sleep — wearing it wakes it up.
-
Hold the power button for 10–15 seconds.
This forces a hard reboot. You should feel a vibration and see the Meta logo appear. If not, the battery may be dead.
-
Charge the headset for at least 30 minutes.
If the battery is completely empty, the headset needs some charge before it will power on. Use the official USB-C cable and charger. A blinking orange light means it is charging.
-
Boot into recovery mode.
Hold Power + Volume Down simultaneously until the boot menu appears. Select Boot Device to restart normally. If stuck in a boot loop, select Factory Reset as a last resort.
-
Check the proximity sensor is not blocked.
The small sensor on the inner face gasket detects when the headset is worn. If it's always covered (by a case, foam, or debris), the Quest thinks it's always in sleep mode. Clean the sensor area with a dry cloth.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Quest 3 shows a black screen only in one eye — what is that?
A black screen in one eye only (while the other works) is a hardware fault — likely a failed display panel or display cable. Contact Meta Support at meta.com/help — Quest 3 is covered by a 1-year warranty.
Can a software update cause the black screen?
Yes — a failed or interrupted system update can leave the Quest in a state where it boots to a black screen. The recovery mode boot menu (Power + Volume Down) lets you retry the update or factory reset.
