Casting Not Working

Meta VR Headset

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Meta Quest casting not working almost always means the Quest and the TV or phone are not on the same Wi-Fi network, or the casting device is not supported. Make sure both devices are on the same 5GHz Wi-Fi network and casting is started from within the Quest menu.

Affected Models

  • Meta Quest 2
  • Meta Quest 3
  • Meta Quest 3S
  • Meta Quest Pro

Common Causes

  • Quest and TV/Chromecast on different Wi-Fi networks or bands (2.4GHz vs 5GHz)
  • Chromecast device not on the same router subnet
  • Meta Horizon app on phone not logged into the same account as the Quest
  • Router blocking mDNS or multicast traffic needed for casting discovery
  • Casting started from phone app instead of from within the Quest headset menu

How to Fix It

  1. Ensure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.

The Quest and the casting target (Chromecast, Fire TV, or phone) must be on the identical Wi-Fi network and band. A router with separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz names is a common cause — put the Quest on 5GHz and the TV on 5GHz as well.

  2. Start casting from inside the Quest.

Press the Meta button on the right controller to open the universal menu. Select the cast icon (the TV with a signal symbol). Choose your casting target from the list. Do not initiate casting from the phone app — it is less reliable.

  3. Open the Meta Horizon app on your phone.

If casting to a phone, the Meta Horizon app must be open and signed into the same Meta account as the headset. Force-close and reopen the app, then retry casting from the Quest menu.

  4. Restart the Chromecast or Fire TV.

Unplug the Chromecast or Fire TV Stick from power for 30 seconds and plug it back in. Allow it to fully start up, then attempt casting again from the Quest menu.

  5. Check router multicast settings.

Some routers with AP isolation or multicast filtering will block casting discovery. Log into your router admin panel and ensure multicast is not disabled and client isolation is off. This is more common on ISP-provided routers and mesh network setups.

When to Call a Professional

Meta Quest casting relies entirely on Wi-Fi infrastructure. If casting never works despite correct setup, the issue is likely a router multicast or mDNS restriction.
