Keeps Going to Sleep

Meta VR Headset

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Meta Quest keeps sleeping because the proximity sensor inside the headset thinks you've taken it off. Check that the sensor isn't blocked by a dirty face gasket, and adjust the auto-sleep timeout in Settings > Power.

Affected Models

  • Meta Quest 2
  • Meta Quest 3
  • Meta Quest 3S
  • Meta Quest Pro

Common Causes

  • Proximity sensor blocked or dirty — sensor reads no face and triggers sleep
  • Auto-sleep timeout set too short — headset sleeps during pauses
  • Face gasket replacement not covering the sensor area properly
  • Glasses with large frames triggering the sensor intermittently
  • Firmware bug causing the proximity sensor to report false negatives

How to Fix It

  1. Check the proximity sensor location.

On Quest 2 and 3, there is a small infrared proximity sensor between the two lenses on the nose bridge area. This sensor detects whether the headset is on your face. Inspect the sensor area for debris, foam residue from the face gasket, or condensation.

  2. Clean the proximity sensor.

Use a dry microfiber cloth or a dry cotton swab to gently clean the black proximity sensor area. Any residue over the sensor will cause it to misread as 'off face' even when wearing the headset.

  3. Adjust the auto-sleep timeout.

Go to Settings > Power on the Quest. Increase the Auto Sleep timeout — the default is 5 minutes but you can extend it. For gaming sessions with long pauses, set it to 15 minutes or the maximum available.

  4. Check the face gasket fit.

If you recently replaced the face gasket with a third-party foam or silicone cover, verify that it is properly seated and not blocking or partially covering the proximity sensor. The sensor must have a clear view into the headset interior.

  5. Update firmware.

Go to Settings > System > Software Update and install any pending updates. Meta has released fixes for proximity sensor sensitivity issues in several firmware versions. After updating, test by wearing the headset and pausing for 2–3 minutes.

When to Call a Professional

If the headset goes to sleep constantly even when worn correctly and the sensor area is clean, the proximity sensor may have failed. Contact Meta support.
