View Recentering Not Working / Wrong Floor Height

Meta VR Headset

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Meta Quest recentering not working is usually caused by Guardian tracking losing its reference or being in a different environment than where it was originally set up. Press and hold the Oculus button for 1 second, or use Quick Settings > Recenter View.

Affected Models

  • Meta Quest 2
  • Meta Quest 3
  • Meta Quest 3S
  • Meta Quest Pro

Common Causes

  • Guardian tracking lost its environmental reference — furniture moved or lighting changed significantly
  • Wrong boundary type selected (Stationary vs Room-scale) for current play area
  • Floor level calibrated at wrong height during initial setup
  • Eye relief (lens position) changed, shifting the perceived horizon in VR
  • Software bug in Guardian that requires a fresh boundary redraw

How to Fix It

  1. Press and hold the Oculus button to recenter.

On Meta Quest 2 and 3, press and hold the Oculus button (the Meta logo button) on the right controller for about 1 second. This immediately recenters the view to face the direction you are currently looking. A short tap only shows the universal menu — hold it to trigger the recenter.

  2. Use Quick Settings to recenter manually.

Look at your left wrist in VR to bring up Quick Settings. Tap the Recenter option. This method also allows you to recenter without a controller button, which is useful if the controller button is unresponsive.

  3. Redraw the Guardian boundary.

If the tracking reference has drifted significantly, recentering alone will not help. Go to Settings > Guardian > Clear Guardian Boundary and redraw a new boundary in the current environment. After setting a fresh boundary, recentering works reliably from that new reference.

  4. Recalibrate the floor level.

If the floor appears too high or low in VR after recentering, the floor level needs recalibration. During the Guardian setup process, make sure you are standing on the actual floor (not a platform or step) when the setup asks you to confirm standing height. Redo the Guardian setup to correct a persistent floor offset.

  5. Improve lighting in the play area.

Meta Quest tracking cameras rely on visible light to map the room. Very dark or very bright direct light environments cause tracking to drift, making recentering unreliable. Add ambient lighting to the play area so the cameras can maintain a stable map.

When to Call a Professional

Tracking and recentering are software functions — no hardware repair is needed. If the cameras appear physically dirty, clean the lenses gently with a microfiber cloth.
