Screen Flickering / Display Flashing
Meta VR Headset
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Meta Quest screen flickering during use is most often caused by a software bug or a pending system update. Install the latest Quest system update and perform a full restart — most flickering issues on Quest 2 and 3 are resolved by updates.
Affected Models
- Meta Quest 2
- Meta Quest 3
- Meta Quest 3S
- Meta Quest Pro
Common Causes
- System software bug causing display driver instability — resolved in updates
- Display refresh rate set incorrectly for the active app
- Overheating — the display dims and flickers when the headset throttles to reduce heat
- USB-C cable issue causing display flicker when wired Link is in use
- Hardware display defect — rare, but occurs in a small percentage of units
How to Fix It
-
Install the latest Quest system update.
Go to Settings > System > Software Update and check for updates. Many reported flickering issues on Quest 2 and Quest 3 were software-related and fixed in system updates. Install any available update and restart the headset fully.
-
Restart the headset.
Hold the power button for 10 seconds, select Restart, and allow the headset to fully reboot. A full restart clears display driver states that can cause flickering without a hardware fault. Do not use the sleep/wake cycle — perform a full restart.
-
Check for overheating.
Extended use, warm environments, or heavy VR apps can cause the Quest to overheat. If the headset feels hot and flickering started after a long session, remove it and let it cool for 15–20 minutes. Ensure the ventilation slots on the headset are not blocked by foam or a carrying case.
-
Check the display refresh rate setting.
Go to Settings > Display and check the refresh rate. If the rate is set higher than the current app supports, the display may flicker during the mismatch. For general use, 72 Hz is the most stable setting across all Quest models.
-
Factory reset as a last resort.
If updates and restarts do not resolve persistent flickering, perform a factory reset. Go to Settings > System > Factory Reset and confirm. Back up any sideloaded apps and data first. If flickering persists after a factory reset, the display hardware needs inspection.
When to Call a Professional
If flickering persists after a full system update and factory reset, and the headset is overheating or physically damaged, the display panel or display driver may be faulty. Contact Meta Support for a warranty replacement.
