Update Failed

Meta VR Headset

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Meta Quest update failed usually means the headset ran out of storage mid-download, lost Wi-Fi during the update, or the Meta servers had a temporary issue. Free up storage, connect to a stable 5GHz Wi-Fi network, and retry the update.

Affected Models

  • Meta Quest 2
  • Meta Quest 3
  • Meta Quest 3S
  • Meta Quest Pro

Common Causes

  • Insufficient storage — update package requires at least 2–4GB free
  • Wi-Fi dropped during download or installation phase
  • Temporary Meta server outage affecting update delivery
  • Corrupted partial download from a previous failed attempt
  • USB-C cable blocking update — disconnect any connected cables before updating

How to Fix It

  1. Check available storage.

Go to Settings > Storage on the Quest. Meta recommends at least 4GB free before a system update. Uninstall unused games or apps to free space, then retry.

  2. Connect to a 5GHz Wi-Fi network.

System updates are large files (often 1–3GB). A weak 2.4GHz connection frequently drops during download. Connect to 5GHz Wi-Fi and stay within range of the router throughout the update.

  3. Disconnect all USB-C cables.

A USB-C cable connected during an update (Link cable, charging cable) can interfere with the update process on some firmware versions. Disconnect everything and retry the update wirelessly.

  4. Restart the headset and retry.

Press the power button, select Restart, and let the Quest fully reboot. This clears any corrupted partial download. After the restart, go to Settings > System > Software Update and check for updates again.

  5. Wait and retry later.

During new firmware rollouts, Meta's servers can be overloaded. If the update fails consistently with good Wi-Fi and enough storage, wait a few hours and try again. You can also enable automatic updates so it will install overnight.

When to Call a Professional

If the headset gets stuck in a boot loop after a failed update, perform a factory reset via the boot menu (hold power + volume down at startup). Contact Meta support if the headset won't boot after reset.
