Black Screen / No Display
Sony PSVR2
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A PSVR2 black screen is almost always caused by the HDMI Sense cable not being fully seated in the PS5 USB-C port. Power off the PS5 completely, unplug the PSVR2 cable, reconnect it firmly, and restart.
Affected Models
- PlayStation VR2
Common Causes
- HDMI Sense cable not fully inserted into the PS5 USB-C port
- PS5 not detecting the PSVR2 — headset needs a fresh connection
- Headset in sleep/standby and the screen has not activated yet
- Display brightness or PSVR2 video settings preventing output
- Defective HDMI Sense cable or damaged PS5 USB-C port
How to Fix It
-
Reseat the PSVR2 cable firmly.
Power the PS5 fully off (not rest mode) using the power button. Unplug the PSVR2 HDMI Sense cable from the PS5 USB-C port. Reconnect it firmly — you should feel it fully seat. Power the PS5 back on and put on the headset.
-
Wake the headset from standby.
The PSVR2 screen turns off after a short period of inactivity to save power. When you put the headset on, it may take 5–10 seconds to wake up. Press the PS button on either Sense controller to activate the headset screen if it does not wake automatically.
-
Check PS5 video output settings.
Go to PS5 Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. While the PSVR2 is connected, try setting the PS5 output resolution to 1080p for testing. Some 4K or VRR settings can cause the PSVR2 display to fail to initialize.
-
Use only the rear USB-C port on the PS5.
Sony specifies that the PSVR2 must be connected to the rear-facing USB-C port on the PS5. Do not use a USB hub or the front USB-C port. If you are using the correct port, try cleaning it gently with compressed air.
-
Test with a different HDMI Sense cable if available.
If you have access to another PSVR2 cable, test it with your headset. A faulty cable is a common hardware cause of persistent black screen that passes all other diagnostics. Replacement PSVR2 cables are available from Sony and authorized retailers.
When to Call a Professional
If a confirmed working cable and USB-C port still produce no image, the PSVR2 display or internal HDMI transmitter may be faulty. Contact Sony PlayStation support for a warranty inspection.
