Display Flickering

PSVR2 VR Headset

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

PSVR2 display flickering is most commonly caused by a loose or damaged headset cable, the PlayStation 5 not being updated to the latest firmware, or the PSVR2 cable being connected to a USB hub rather than directly to the PS5. Always connect the PSVR2 cable directly to the USB-C port on the front of the PS5.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation VR2

Common Causes

  • Loose or damaged USB-C cable connection at the PS5 or headset end
  • Cable connected to a USB hub or extension — insufficient bandwidth
  • PS5 firmware out of date — Sony patches PSVR2 display issues regularly
  • PSVR2 headset firmware out of date
  • Overheating PS5 reducing GPU performance and causing frame issues
  • OLED display hardware fault (rare on newer units)

How to Fix It

  1. Check the USB-C cable connection at both ends.

Disconnect the PSVR2 cable at the PS5 and at the headset, inspect the connectors for damage, and reconnect firmly. The PSVR2 cable must connect directly to the USB-C port on the front of the PS5 — not to a hub, dock, or extension. A loose connection is the most common cause of display flickering.

  2. Update the PS5 system software.

Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Install any available update. Sony has released multiple patches addressing PSVR2 display flickering and stability issues.

  3. Update the PSVR2 headset firmware.

PSVR2 firmware updates through the PS5 when connected. Go to Settings > Accessories > PlayStation VR2 > Headset Software Update. Install any available headset firmware update.

  4. Ensure the PS5 has adequate ventilation.

An overheating PS5 throttles its GPU, which can cause frame pacing issues that appear as flickering in the PSVR2. Ensure the PS5 has at least 10cm of clearance on all sides. Clean the PS5 vents with compressed air if dust buildup is visible.

  5. Try a different USB-C cable.

PSVR2 is compatible with USB 3.2 Gen 2 USB-C cables. If Sony's replacement cable program is active for your region (Sony has acknowledged cable faults in some batches), contact PlayStation support. A quality third-party USB 3.2 Gen 2 cable may also resolve the issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PSVR2 display flickering a known hardware defect?

Sony has acknowledged display issues on some PSVR2 units and has released firmware patches addressing flickering. If your headset flickers consistently after all software updates, contact PlayStation Support — units exhibiting hardware-level display faults have been repaired or replaced under warranty.

Why does PSVR2 flicker only in certain games but not others?

Game-specific flickering usually means the issue is a software rendering bug in that particular title rather than a hardware fault. Check if a patch is available for the game. If multiple unrelated games all flicker, the cause is hardware or system software rather than a single game.
