Firmware Update Failed
Sony PSVR2
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
PSVR2 firmware update failures are most often caused by a weak Wi-Fi connection on the PS5 or insufficient free storage. Switch the PS5 to a wired Ethernet connection, free at least 5 GB of storage, and retry the update.
Affected Models
- PlayStation VR2
Common Causes
- Weak or unstable Wi-Fi on the PS5 interrupting the firmware download
- Insufficient storage space on the PS5 for the update package
- PSVR2 cable disconnected mid-update, interrupting the installation
- PS5 system software out of date — PSVR2 updates may require a current PS5 version
- Corrupted download file requiring a fresh download attempt
How to Fix It
-
Switch the PS5 to a wired Ethernet connection.
Go to PS5 Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection and choose LAN Cable. A wired connection eliminates Wi-Fi interruptions during the firmware download. Retry the update after switching to wired.
-
Free at least 5 GB of PS5 storage.
Go to PS5 Settings > Storage and check available space. Delete games or media you no longer need. The PSVR2 firmware update package requires several gigabytes of temporary storage to download and install.
-
Keep the PSVR2 cable connected throughout the update.
Do not disconnect the PSVR2 cable from the PS5 while an update is in progress. Ensure the PS5 is plugged into mains power so it does not enter rest mode mid-update. Also disable auto-rest mode temporarily in Settings > System > Power Saving.
-
Update PS5 system software first.
Go to PS5 Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Install any available PS5 system update before retrying the PSVR2 firmware update. PSVR2 firmware updates sometimes require a minimum PS5 system version to install.
-
Restart the PS5 and retry.
Hold the PS5 power button for 3 seconds to perform a full restart (not rest mode). Once the PS5 is fully booted, go to Settings > Accessories > PlayStation VR2 > Headset Software Update and try again. A restart clears any corrupted download cache from a previous failed attempt.
When to Call a Professional
If the PSVR2 headset becomes completely unresponsive after a failed update and will not enter setup mode, contact Sony PlayStation support — it may require a factory service reset.
