Headset Disconnecting / Drops Connection
Sony PSVR2
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
PSVR2 disconnections during gameplay are almost always caused by the HDMI Sense cable being partially seated or bent sharply at the PS5 USB-C port. Check both cable ends, route the cable without sharp bends, and reconnect firmly.
Affected Models
- PlayStation VR2
Common Causes
- HDMI Sense cable partially seated at the PS5 USB-C port — movement during play causes momentary disconnection
- Cable routed at a sharp angle that stresses the USB-C connector over time
- PS5 USB-C port slightly damaged from repeated cable insertions
- PSVR2 firmware bug — older versions had intermittent connection drop issues
- PS5 entering partial rest mode, briefly cutting power to the USB-C port
How to Fix It
-
Reseat the cable at both ends.
Unplug the PSVR2 cable from the PS5 USB-C port and from the headset connector. Reconnect both ends firmly until they are fully seated. Route the cable along the back of the setup area so there is no cable tension pulling on the port during play.
-
Route the cable without sharp bends.
Ensure the cable does not bend at a tight angle right where it enters the PS5. A sharp bend near the connector creates stress that causes intermittent disconnection. Use a cable clip or adhesive guide to keep the cable relaxed and away from foot traffic.
-
Update PSVR2 firmware.
Go to PS5 Settings > Accessories > PlayStation VR2 > Headset Software Update. Early PSVR2 firmware versions had a known bug causing random disconnections during extended play. Install the latest firmware before performing any further troubleshooting.
-
Disable PS5 automatic rest mode.
Go to PS5 Settings > System > Power Saving > Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode. Set both options to Don't Put in Rest Mode while using the PSVR2. The PS5 briefly reduces power to USB ports just before entering rest mode, which can trigger a disconnect.
-
Test the USB-C port for physical looseness.
Gently wiggle the cable in the USB-C port while the system is running and observe whether any movement triggers a disconnect. If wiggling the cable causes disconnects, the port may be mechanically worn. Avoid applying side force to the port and contact Sony if the port itself needs repair.
When to Call a Professional
If the cable and port are confirmed good and disconnections persist after a firmware update, the internal HDMI transmitter board in the headset cable may be faulty. Contact Sony PlayStation support.
