Headset Not Charging

PSVR2 VR Headset

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

PSVR2 Sense controllers not charging is usually caused by the charging cable not making full contact, the PS5 being in rest mode with USB power disabled, or dirty charging contacts. Check that USB charging in rest mode is enabled on the PS5.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation VR2 Sense Controller

Common Causes

  • PS5 rest mode has USB power supply disabled — controllers receive no charge in rest mode
  • USB-C charging cable not fully seated in the controller
  • Dirty or corroded USB-C port on the controller
  • Controller battery deeply discharged — requires extended time before showing charge indicator
  • Faulty charging cable

How to Fix It

  1. Enable USB power supply in PS5 rest mode.

On the PS5, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Enable Supply Power to USB Ports. Select either 3 hours or Always — without this setting, the PS5 USB ports are dead in rest mode and controllers will not charge.

  2. Check the USB-C connection on the controller.

The PSVR2 Sense controllers charge via USB-C. Disconnect and reconnect the cable, ensuring it is fully inserted. Also try a different USB-C cable — cable faults are a common cause of charging failures.

  3. Clean the USB-C port on the controller.

Use a wooden toothpick or a dry soft-bristle brush to gently remove any lint or debris from the controller's USB-C port. Do not use metal tools. Debris in the port prevents the cable from making full electrical contact.

  4. Leave on charge for at least 30 minutes if the controller is deeply discharged.

A fully discharged Sense controller may not show any charging indicator for the first 15-30 minutes. Leave it connected and check again after 30 minutes. The orange charging light should appear once the battery reaches a minimum charge level.

  5. Try charging from a different USB power source.

Charge via a USB wall adapter (5V/1A minimum) rather than the PS5 if you are having intermittent issues. This isolates whether the problem is the PS5 USB port, the cable, or the controller itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to fully charge PSVR2 Sense controllers?

A fully depleted PSVR2 Sense controller takes approximately 2 hours to fully charge from USB-C. The orange LED turns off when charging is complete.

Can I charge PSVR2 Sense controllers without the PS5?

Yes — the Sense controllers charge from any USB-C power source. A standard 5W USB-C phone charger will charge them, though it may be slower than charging from the PS5. Sony also sells a dedicated PSVR2 Sense controller charging station as an accessory.
