Headset Overheating

Sony PSVR2

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

PSVR2 headset getting hot is normal during extended VR sessions — the displays, processors, and headphone drivers all generate heat. If the headset becomes uncomfortably warm or shows an overheat warning, take a break, improve room ventilation, and ensure the USB-C cable is not restricted. The PS5 will display a warning and shut down the headset if temperature becomes unsafe.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation VR2

Common Causes

  • Extended play session — heat accumulates in the closed headset housing during long sessions
  • High ambient room temperature — the headset cannot dissipate heat in a hot environment
  • USB-C cable bent at a sharp angle near the headset — can partially restrict the data/power line
  • Playing graphically demanding VR games that drive the PS5 and displays at maximum output
  • Ventilation slots on the headset blocked by incorrect storage or accessories

How to Fix It

  1. Take a break and allow the headset to cool.

Remove the headset and place it on a flat surface with the lens facing down (to protect lenses from direct light). The headset will cool to ambient temperature within 10–15 minutes. VR headsets are designed for sessions of 30–60 minutes with breaks.

  2. Improve room ventilation.

Move a fan to circulate air in the room or open a window. The PSVR2 needs to dissipate heat into the surrounding air — a hot, still room significantly worsens the problem. A room above 30°C will cause the headset to run much hotter.

  3. Check that the USB-C cable has a gentle bend near the headset.

The PSVR2 USB-C cable should not be sharply bent or kinked near the headset connection point. A restricted cable can cause the headset to run hot in some cases. Route the cable so it curves gently downward without sharp angles.

  4. Reduce session length and take regular breaks.

Sony recommends taking a 15-minute break every hour of VR play. This is both a safety recommendation for eye comfort and helps manage the thermal load of the headset. Setting a timer helps maintain healthy session lengths.

  5. Store the headset in a well-ventilated location.

Do not store the PSVR2 in an enclosed bag or drawer immediately after use. Leave it in the open to cool completely before storing. Putting a hot headset into a case retains heat and can affect battery and display life.

When to Call a Professional

If the PSVR2 shuts down due to overheating during short sessions (under 30 minutes) in a room below 25°C, a hardware fault may be causing abnormal heat generation. Contact PlayStation support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to continue using the PSVR2 when it feels warm?

A warm headset during play is normal and safe. If the headset becomes hot enough to be uncomfortable against your face, take a break. The PS5 will display a warning and shut down the headset automatically before temperatures reach a damaging level.

Does the PSVR2 have a built-in fan?

No — the PSVR2 headset does not contain a cooling fan. Heat is dissipated passively through the headset housing. This is why room temperature and session length have a significant effect on how warm the headset gets.
