Lenses Fogging

Sony PSVR2

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

PSVR2 lenses fog when your warm breath rises into the headset and condenses on the cooler Fresnel lens surfaces. The fix is to ensure the face seal fits snugly with no gap at the top, reduce room humidity, and allow the headset to warm up to room temperature before use if stored in a cold space.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation VR2

Common Causes

  • Face seal gap at the top of the headset — breath rising and hitting the cold lenses
  • Headset stored in a cold room and used in a warmer room — lenses are colder than ambient air
  • High humidity in the room — more moisture in the air increases condensation
  • Active physical gameplay — increased breathing rate sends more warm, moist air into the headset
  • Face seal padding compressed with age — losing its original shape and fit

How to Fix It

  1. Adjust the headset fit to close any gap at the top.

Most fogging enters through a gap between the top of the face cushion and your forehead. Tighten the overhead strap or tilt the headset down slightly so the face cushion seals against your face along the full top edge.

  2. Allow the headset to reach room temperature before use.

If the PSVR2 was stored in a cold room or garage, the lenses will be colder than the air in your playing area. Leave the headset at room temperature for 15–20 minutes before putting it on — this eliminates temperature-difference fogging.

  3. Reduce room humidity.

A dehumidifier or air conditioner reduces the moisture content of the room air. Less humidity means less moisture available to condense on the lenses, significantly reducing fogging during play.

  4. Use a lens cloth to clear fogging during play.

If the lenses fog during a session, remove the headset and gently wipe the lenses with the microfibre cloth included with the PSVR2. Never use clothing, paper towels, or chemical cleaners — the Fresnel lens coating is delicate.

  5. Consider a replacement face cushion with better seal.

After extended use, the foam face seal compresses and no longer provides as tight a seal as when new. Sony and third-party suppliers sell replacement face cushions for the PSVR2 in different thickness options to improve fit and reduce fogging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is lens fogging on PSVR2 damaging to the lenses?

Condensation itself does not damage the lenses. The risk is rubbing the lenses with an unsuitable cloth to remove the fog — this can scratch or remove the anti-reflective coating. Always use the included microfibre cloth and wipe very gently.

Does anti-fog spray work on PSVR2 lenses?

No — do not apply anti-fog spray, lens cleaner, or any chemical to PSVR2 Fresnel lenses. These products can permanently damage the lens coating. The only approved cleaning method is a dry microfibre cloth.
