Microphone Not Working
Sony PSVR2
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
PSVR2 mic issues are usually caused by the PS5 routing microphone input to the DualSense controller instead of the PSVR2 headset. Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone > Input Device on the PS5 and select the PSVR2 Headset.
Affected Models
- PlayStation VR2
Common Causes
- PS5 microphone input still set to the DualSense controller, not the PSVR2 headset
- Microphone muted in PS5 settings or in the game's own audio menu
- Party chat privacy setting or parental control blocking microphone access
- PSVR2 firmware needs update — mic detection bugs fixed in later versions
- PSVR2 headset cable not fully seated in the PS5 USB-C port
How to Fix It
-
Set PS5 microphone input to the PSVR2 headset.
Go to PS5 Settings > Sound > Microphone > Input Device. Select PSVR2 Headset from the list. This setting does not switch automatically when you put on the headset — it must be set manually each time if another device was used last.
-
Check the inline mute button on the headset cable.
The PSVR2 headset cable has a small inline button near the ear sections that toggles the microphone mute. Press it once to unmute if the mic LED indicator is lit. Also confirm the microphone status is On in Settings > Sound > Microphone > Microphone Status During Party Chat.
-
Check the game's own voice chat settings.
Many games have their own voice chat input settings inside the game menu. Look for a Voice Chat or Audio Input section and ensure it is not set to Off or System Default. System Default on some games routes to the DualSense controller mic rather than the headset.
-
Update PSVR2 firmware.
Go to PS5 Settings > Accessories > PlayStation VR2 > Headset Software Update. Install any available firmware update. Several early PSVR2 firmware versions had microphone detection bugs that were resolved in subsequent updates.
-
Reseat the PSVR2 cable in the PS5 USB-C port.
Power off the PS5 fully and disconnect the PSVR2 HDMI Sense cable. Reconnect it firmly until it is fully seated. A slightly loose cable prevents the microphone audio path from functioning even when the display and tracking work normally.
When to Call a Professional
If the mic shows as the active input device but produces no output after all software fixes, the microphone hardware in the PSVR2 headset cable may be defective. Contact Sony PlayStation support for warranty service.
