P0051

Universal (All Makes) Vehicle (OBD-II)

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Code P0051 means the oxygen sensor heater circuit on Bank 2, Sensor 1 is drawing too little voltage — or no voltage at all. The ECM (engine computer) detected a low signal in the circuit that powers the sensor's built-in heater. This is the upstream sensor on the side of the engine without cylinder 1.

Affected Models

  • Most V6 and V8 vehicles (2000–present)
  • Ford Explorer
  • Toyota Tundra
  • Honda Pilot
  • Dodge Charger

Common Causes

  • A short to ground in the heater circuit wiring — the wire is touching bare metal
  • The oxygen sensor itself has failed internally
  • A damaged wiring harness connector at the oxygen sensor plug
  • Corroded or loose ground connection for the sensor heater circuit
  • A faulty engine control module (ECM) not providing proper voltage

How to Fix It

  1. Scan for all stored codes. A P0051 often appears alongside P0050 or P0053 — note all codes before starting repairs.

Multiple codes together give a clearer picture of whether this is a sensor issue or a wiring issue.

  2. Locate the Bank 2, Sensor 1 oxygen sensor. It sits on the exhaust before the catalytic converter on Bank 2.

Bank 2 is the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder number 1.

  3. Inspect the sensor wiring harness for any damaged insulation, bare copper wire, or wires touching the exhaust pipe or engine block.

A wire rubbing on the exhaust manifold will eventually short to ground and trigger this code.

  4. Check the sensor connector for corrosion or bent pins. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and reseat the connector firmly.

Corrosion is very common on older vehicles in wet climates.

  5. Replace the oxygen sensor if wiring checks out clean. Use an OEM-equivalent sensor for best results. Clear the code and complete a full drive cycle.

Drive at various speeds including highway for 15–20 minutes to allow monitors to complete.

When to Call a Professional

If inspecting the wiring and replacing the sensor does not resolve P0051, have a technician perform a voltage drop test on the circuit. ECM issues are uncommon but do occur. Shop labor for diagnosis and repair typically runs $100–$300.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between P0050 and P0051?

P0050 is a general heater circuit fault — something is wrong but the ECM does not specify high or low. P0051 is more specific: the circuit is reading low voltage. This usually points to a short to ground in the wiring or a failed sensor drawing too little current.

Can a bad ground cause P0051?

Yes. A poor ground connection on the sensor heater circuit can cause a low voltage reading. Check the ground wire and the chassis ground points near the sensor.

How long can I drive with P0051 before it causes other damage?

Driving with P0051 for a short time is generally okay. But if left too long, the engine will run on open-loop fuel management longer after cold starts. This can shorten catalytic converter life and reduce fuel efficiency. Fix it within a few weeks.
