P0234

OBD-II Diagnostic Code

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

P0234 means the turbocharger is producing more boost pressure than the ECM allows. This is dangerous and can cause engine damage. The wastegate, boost control solenoid, or boost sensor may be faulty.

Affected Models

  • All turbocharged OBD-II vehicles (1996+)

Common Causes

  • Wastegate stuck closed — not releasing excess pressure
  • Boost control solenoid failed
  • Boost pressure sensor inaccurate
  • Vacuum line to wastegate cracked or disconnected
  • Aftermarket tune setting boost too high

How to Fix It

  1. Check the wastegate vacuum/pressure lines.

The wastegate is controlled by a vacuum or pressure line. A cracked or disconnected line prevents the wastegate from opening.

  2. Test the boost control solenoid.

The solenoid controls boost pressure. If it is stuck, boost is uncontrolled. Test with a multimeter and replace if faulty.

  3. Have the turbo system inspected for mechanical issues.

A stuck wastegate actuator requires turbo removal in many cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can overboost damage my engine?

Yes. Excessive boost pressure can cause detonation (knock), blown head gaskets, cracked pistons, or connecting rod failure.

Is P0234 related to aftermarket tunes?

Possibly. Aftermarket ECU tunes that raise boost limits can trigger P0234 if boost exceeds even the modified targets.
