P0276

Universal (All Makes) Vehicle (OBD-II)

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

P0276 means the fuel injector circuit for Cylinder 6 is reading a low voltage or current signal. The ECM fires each injector by completing a ground circuit through an internal driver. When the Cylinder 6 circuit response is weaker than expected, P0276 is stored. This could mean the injector itself is faulty, or it could point to a bad connector, a broken wire, or a failing ECM driver. Common symptoms include rough idle, hesitation, and often a Cylinder 6 misfire or contribution fault code alongside it.

Affected Models

  • All vehicles 1996+ with 6 or more cylinders
  • Common in V6, V8, V10, and V12 engines
  • Common in high-mileage fleet vehicles and trucks
  • More frequent in vehicles with heat-damaged rear-bank wiring harnesses

Common Causes

  • Corroded or loose connector at the Cylinder 6 fuel injector
  • Broken or chafed wire in the harness between the ECM and the Cylinder 6 injector
  • Internally open Cylinder 6 fuel injector that no longer passes current properly
  • ECM injector driver circuit failure for Cylinder 6
  • Blown fuse or failed relay in the injector power supply circuit

How to Fix It

  1. Locate the Cylinder 6 injector and inspect its electrical connector. Unplug it and look for green corrosion, bent or pushed-back pins, moisture, or a loose-fitting connector body. Clean with contact cleaner and reseat it firmly.

Cylinder 6 on most V6 and V8 engines is on the rear bank and tends to be the hardest to access — which often means it goes the longest without inspection.

  2. Visually inspect the injector wiring harness from the Cylinder 6 connector back toward the ECM. Pay special attention to areas where the harness crosses the exhaust manifold, firewall, or any sharp metal edge. Look for burnt insulation or exposed wire strands.

Even a partial break in the wire — where some strands are intact but others are broken — can cause an intermittent low-circuit code.

  3. Measure the resistance of the Cylinder 6 injector. Unplug the connector and use a multimeter set to ohms across the two injector terminals. Expect 10–18 ohms on most port-injected vehicles. Infinite resistance (OL) means the injector coil is open — the injector needs replacement.

An open injector simply won't fire. Cylinder 6 will get zero fuel, causing a hard misfire and eventually triggering additional codes.

  4. Inspect the injector fuse and relay. Use your owner's manual to locate the fuel injector circuit fuse in the fuse box. Pull it and check for continuity. Also wiggle the injector relay in its socket and look for signs of overheating or corrosion.

A fuse that tests good at rest can still fail under load — if in doubt, swap the relay with an identical one from another circuit.

  5. If all components test good, have a professional measure the ECM's injector drive signal for Cylinder 6 using a lab scope. A missing or weak signal from the ECM confirms a driver failure. Confirm this before purchasing any replacement ECM.

A used or remanufactured ECM programmed to your vehicle's VIN is often a viable, lower-cost option if the ECM driver has truly failed.

When to Call a Professional

If the connector and visible wiring check out but P0276 persists, don't assume the ECM is bad without professional circuit testing. ECM replacement is expensive and often unnecessary. Have a shop use a breakout box and oscilloscope to confirm the ECM output signal before authorizing any module purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I clear P0276 and keep driving?

You can clear it, but it will likely return if the underlying problem isn't fixed. If Cylinder 6 isn't getting fuel, it will misfire — and active misfires can damage the catalytic converter within days. Fix the root cause before relying on the vehicle for important trips.

How do I know if the injector is actually not firing?

The simplest check is to touch each injector lightly with your finger while the engine idles. A working injector has a slight buzz or pulse you can feel. No pulse on Cylinder 6 while other injectors buzz away is a strong sign it's not firing.

How much does it cost to fix P0276?

Connector cleaning or repair: Free to $50. Wiring harness repair: $100–$300. Injector replacement: $150–$400 installed. ECM repair or replacement: $300–$1,200+.
