P0492

Universal (All Makes) Vehicle (OBD-II)

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

P0492 means the secondary air injection system is not working correctly on engine bank 2. Bank 2 is the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder number 1 — usually the passenger side on most V-engines. The system injects air into the exhaust during cold starts to reduce emissions. When the PCM does not see the expected oxygen increase in the bank 2 exhaust, it stores P0492.

Affected Models

  • V6 and V8 vehicles 1996 and newer with secondary air injection systems
  • Very common on BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Volkswagen
  • GM V8 trucks and SUVs (Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon)
  • Ford trucks and SUVs with V8 engines
  • Lexus and Toyota V8 vehicles (4Runner V8, Lexus GX, Lexus LS)

Common Causes

  • Bank 2 check valve has failed closed — air cannot enter the bank 2 exhaust manifold
  • Secondary air injection pump is weak or failed — both banks are affected but P0492 triggers first or alone
  • Bank 2 switching or diverter valve has failed — air is not being directed to the correct bank
  • Rubber hose between the air pump and bank 2 is cracked, collapsed, or disconnected
  • Water damage inside the air injection pump from road spray causes reduced output or complete failure

How to Fix It

  1. Note whether P0491 is also stored alongside P0492. If both codes are present, the problem is in the shared components — the pump, relay, fuse, or main hose. If only P0492 is set, focus on the bank 2 specific check valve, switching valve, and hose.

Diagnosing both codes together versus just one is an important first step that saves a lot of time.

  2. Locate and test the bank 2 check valve. It connects to the bank 2 exhaust manifold or pipe. Try blowing through it from the pump side — air should flow through easily. Blowing from the exhaust side should feel completely blocked.

Check valves prevent hot exhaust gases from flowing backward into the pump. A stuck-closed check valve is very common and inexpensive to replace.

  3. Inspect the rubber hose from the main air injection pump output to the bank 2 switching valve and check valve. Check for cracks, splits, and disconnected ends. Replace any hose that looks brittle or cracked.

These hoses are under pressure from the pump and can develop pinhole leaks that are hard to see visually — run your hand along the hose while the pump runs to feel for air escaping.

  4. Test the bank 2 switching valve. Apply vacuum to the valve's vacuum port — it should hold vacuum and open the air passage when vacuum is applied. If the diaphragm is torn, the valve will not hold vacuum and air will not flow to bank 2.

Switching valves are vacuum-operated on most vehicles. The vacuum supply hose is also a common failure point — check it for cracks.

  5. If both P0491 and P0492 are set and bank-specific components check out, test the pump. Apply direct 12V to the pump motor. A healthy pump produces strong audible airflow. A weak or silent pump needs replacement.

Protect the replacement pump from water by ensuring the mounting location's drain holes are clear or by adding a moisture shield if your vehicle is prone to water ingestion.

When to Call a Professional

If both P0491 and P0492 are present, the pump or shared components are likely the problem. If only P0492 is set, the bank 2 specific components (check valve, switching valve, hose) are more likely at fault. Repair costs range from $50 for a check valve to $500+ for a complete pump replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which side of the engine is bank 2?

Bank 2 is the side of the engine that does NOT contain cylinder number 1. On most GM V8 engines, bank 2 is the passenger side. On most Ford V8 engines, bank 2 is the driver's side. Always check your specific service manual — it varies by make and model.

Can P0492 come back after fixing the check valve?

Yes, if the root cause was not the check valve. Common reasons for repeat codes include a weak pump that barely passed the initial test, a hose with a small crack that gets worse, or a switching valve diaphragm that is about to tear. Replace everything you find that is marginal, not just the most obvious failed part.

Does P0492 affect driving performance?

Generally not — secondary air injection only runs for 60 to 90 seconds at cold start. Your vehicle will drive, accelerate, and stop normally. The main consequences are a check engine light and a failed emissions test.
