Parent Unit Not Charging
Infant Optics Baby Monitor
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Infant Optics DXR-8 parent unit not charging is usually caused by a worn USB charging cable, a dirty charging port, or a battery that has degraded after 2–3 years of daily use. Try a different micro-USB cable and a 5V wall charger before concluding the battery needs replacement.
Affected Models
- Infant Optics DXR-8
- Infant Optics DXR-8 PRO
Common Causes
- Micro-USB cable worn or broken at the connector
- Charging port on the parent unit dirty with lint
- Battery aged after 2–3 years of continuous use
- Charging from a computer USB port — current may be insufficient
- Parent unit left in hot conditions accelerating battery degradation
How to Fix It
-
Try a different micro-USB cable.
The DXR-8 parent unit charges via micro-USB. The included cable is often the first component to fail. Test with a known-good data-capable micro-USB cable from another device (not a charge-only cable).
-
Use a 5V wall charger rather than a computer USB port.
Charging from a computer USB port at 0.5A is slow and may not provide enough current for a fully depleted battery. Use a 5V, 1A or higher phone charger for reliable charging.
-
Clean the charging port.
Inspect the micro-USB port on the bottom of the parent unit for lint or debris. Use a dry wooden toothpick or a brief blast of compressed air to clear the port. A partially blocked port prevents the cable from seating fully.
-
Allow the unit to charge uninterrupted for 3 hours.
If the battery is very deeply discharged, the charging indicator may not appear for 30–60 minutes. Leave it connected to a wall charger for 3 hours before concluding the charge is not working.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should the Infant Optics DXR-8 parent unit last on a charge?
Infant Optics rates the DXR-8 parent unit at up to 10 hours on battery with the screen on, or up to 24 hours in power-saving (VOX) mode. After 2–3 years of daily charging, the battery typically holds 50–70% of its original capacity.
Can I use the Infant Optics DXR-8 while charging?
Yes — the parent unit works normally while plugged into the charger. Many parents keep it plugged in overnight and use it on battery during the day. Keeping it on charge most of the time is fine for the lithium battery.
