Night Vision Not Working

Infant Optics Baby Monitor

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Infant Optics night vision not working means the camera's infrared LEDs are not activating in low light. The DXR-8 should automatically switch to night vision (black-and-white image with IR illumination) when the room is dark. If the image is dark, check whether a night light in the room is keeping the camera in colour mode, or whether the IR LEDs have failed.

Affected Models

  • Infant Optics DXR-8
  • Infant Optics DXR-8 PRO

Common Causes

  • Room not dark enough to trigger automatic IR switch — dim light keeps camera in colour mode
  • Night light or projector emitting just enough light to prevent IR activation
  • Camera lens dirty — dust or fingerprints reduce IR sensitivity
  • IR LEDs failed — hardware fault in the camera unit
  • Magnetic lens adapter blocking the IR LEDs on DXR-8 with interchangeable lenses

How to Fix It

  1. Darken the room and test again.

The DXR-8 switches automatically to night vision when ambient light drops below a threshold. If a night light, projector, or streetlight through a window is providing low-level light, the camera stays in colour mode. Cover the light source briefly and watch whether the camera image switches to black-and-white IR mode.

  2. Check that the lens is clean.

The IR LEDs are positioned around the camera lens. Fingerprints or dust on the lens reduce the effective range of night vision. Wipe the lens gently with a clean microfibre cloth.

  3. Check the lens attachment on DXR-8 interchangeable lens models.

The DXR-8 with interchangeable lenses has add-on lens modules that clip over the camera. If a lens module is not fully seated or slightly misaligned, it can partially block the IR LEDs around the camera aperture. Remove and reattach the lens module.

  4. Power cycle the camera unit.

Unplug the camera power adapter, wait 30 seconds, and plug back in. Some IR switching failures are caused by a software lock-up in the camera that clears with a restart.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far does the Infant Optics DXR-8 night vision reach?

The DXR-8 night vision range is approximately 15 feet (4.5 metres) in total darkness. The infrared illumination allows you to see movement but the image is in black-and-white. The standard lens covers a normal room from a 6–10 foot distance.

Why does my Infant Optics camera look green/pixelated at night?

A green or heavily pixelated night image on the DXR-8 usually means the room has very low ambient light but the camera has not fully switched to IR mode. Try completely blocking all ambient light and see if the image improves.
