Camera Overheating

Infant Optics Baby Monitor

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Infant Optics DXR-8 cameras run warm during normal operation — this is expected. The camera should be warm to the touch but not hot enough to burn. If the camera is shutting down unexpectedly or the case is excessively hot, ensure it is not placed in an enclosed space, direct sunlight, or against a wall with no airflow.

Affected Models

  • Infant Optics DXR-8
  • Infant Optics DXR-8 PRO

Common Causes

  • Camera placed in an enclosed space with no airflow — normal heat cannot dissipate
  • Direct sunlight hitting the camera during daylight hours
  • Camera placed too close to a heating vent or radiator
  • Power adapter delivering incorrect voltage — causes increased internal heat
  • Continuous streaming for many hours in a warm room

How to Fix It

  1. Ensure the camera has adequate airflow.

Do not place the camera against a wall, inside a closed cabinet, or under fabric. Position the camera in an open location on the dresser, shelf, or mounting bracket with a few centimetres of clearance on all sides.

  2. Keep the camera out of direct sunlight.

During daytime, direct sunlight through a window can heat the camera significantly and cause it to overheat. Position the camera so sunlight does not fall directly on the unit.

  3. Use the original Infant Optics power adapter.

The camera runs on 5V DC. Using a higher-voltage adapter or a poorly regulated cheap adapter can cause the camera to run abnormally hot. Always use the power adapter included with the DXR-8.

  4. Unplug the camera for 30 minutes if it has shut down.

If the camera shuts off from heat, unplug it and allow it to cool to room temperature before plugging back in. If it repeatedly shuts off after cooling, the internal thermal protection circuit may be triggering abnormally — contact Infant Optics support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for the Infant Optics camera to be warm?

Yes. The DXR-8 camera will be noticeably warm after running for several hours — this is normal. The camera case is designed to dissipate heat passively. It should be warm but not painful to touch. If it burns to touch, that is abnormal and the power supply should be checked.

Is it safe to leave the Infant Optics camera running all night in a baby room?

Yes — the DXR-8 is designed to run continuously, including overnight. Ensure the camera is positioned with adequate airflow and not near any heat source. Many parents run it 24/7 for the first year of a baby's life without any problems.
