Screen Too Dark

Infant Optics Baby Monitor

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

A very dark picture on the DXR-8 usually means the brightness is set too low, the camera's IR night vision is not activating, or the lens is dirty. Increase brightness and clean the lens.

Affected Models

  • Infant Optics DXR-8
  • Infant Optics DXR-8 Pro

Common Causes

  • Parent unit brightness set too low
  • Camera IR LEDs partially blocked
  • Camera lens dirty
  • Night vision not switching on (room not dark enough)
  • IR LEDs failing (on older units)

How to Fix It

  1. Increase the brightness on the parent unit.

Use the brightness button to increase to maximum. The default may be set low to save battery.

  2. Clean the camera lens.

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Dust and fingerprints reduce image clarity.

  3. Make sure the room is dark enough for IR to activate.

A dim night light might prevent the camera from switching to night vision. Darken the room more or turn off the night light.

  4. Check that nothing is blocking the IR LEDs around the lens.

The IR LEDs surround the camera lens. A wall or object too close reflects IR light and washes out the image.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add a night light and still use night vision?

A very dim red night light usually works — the camera still switches to IR mode. Bright white night lights may prevent IR activation.

Do the IR LEDs wear out?

IR LEDs last thousands of hours. But on very old units (5+ years), they can dim. If night vision is noticeably worse than when new, the unit may need replacing.
