Temperature Sensor Not Working
Motorola Baby Monitor
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Motorola baby monitor room temperature sensor not working or showing wrong values is usually a calibration issue or a display setting — not a hardware fault. The temperature sensor is inside the camera unit, so it measures the temperature near the camera, not the average room temperature. Allow 30 minutes for the reading to stabilise after moving the camera.
Affected Models
- Motorola VM65
- Motorola VM75
- Motorola MBP845
- Motorola Connect40
- Most Motorola monitors with temperature display
Common Causes
- Camera placed near a heat source (lamp, radiator, sunny window) — gives falsely high readings
- Camera just installed or moved — sensor needs time to adjust to ambient temperature
- Temperature displayed in Celsius when user expects Fahrenheit (or vice versa)
- Firmware bug showing incorrect temperature — fixed with update
- Sensor hardware fault — rare but possible after physical damage
How to Fix It
-
Allow 30 minutes after placing the camera.
The temperature sensor inside the camera takes time to reach thermal equilibrium with the room. A freshly placed camera shows the temperature it was stored at, not the room temperature. Wait 30 minutes for an accurate reading.
-
Check the temperature unit (°C vs °F).
On the parent unit, go to Menu → Settings → Units (or Temperature). Confirm whether the unit is Celsius or Fahrenheit. A reading of 72 in °F is correct (22°C) but a reading of 72 in °C would be wrong. Switch the unit to match your expectation.
-
Move the camera away from heat and cold sources.
The temperature sensor reads the air temperature at the camera location. A camera next to a bedside lamp, on a windowsill with sunlight, or near an air conditioning vent reads the local temperature, not the average room temperature. Reposition the camera to the centre of the room.
-
Power cycle the parent unit.
If the temperature display appears frozen or showing an implausible value, restart the parent unit by pressing the power button for 3 seconds. The temperature reading refreshes after restart.
Frequently Asked Questions
What temperature range should a baby's room be kept at?
Most paediatricians recommend keeping a baby's room between 16–20°C (61–68°F). This range reduces the risk of overheating, which is a risk factor associated with SIDS. The Motorola monitor's temperature alert can be configured to warn if the room goes above or below set thresholds.
Can I set temperature alerts on a Motorola baby monitor?
Yes. On models with the temperature sensor, go to Menu → Temperature Alerts. You can set a maximum and minimum temperature threshold. The parent unit will beep and display an alert if the room temperature goes outside the configured range.
