Breathing Band Not Working

Nanit Baby Monitor (Camera)

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Nanit breathing band not working means the app is not receiving breathing data from the swaddle band or sleeping bag worn by the baby. The most common causes are the band pattern being obscured (covered by a blanket), the camera not being mounted overhead, or the Nanit Insights subscription having lapsed.

Affected Models

  • Nanit Pro
  • Nanit Plus (with Breathing Wear)

Common Causes

  • Band pattern covered by a blanket or the baby rolled onto their side
  • Camera not positioned directly overhead — side views prevent pattern recognition
  • Nanit Insights subscription lapsed — breathing monitoring requires an active subscription
  • Band too small or too large for the baby — pattern not in camera frame
  • App needs updating — older versions lose compatibility with the breathing algorithm

How to Fix It

  1. Ensure the breathing band pattern is visible to the camera.

The Nanit breathing band has a distinctive pattern that the camera's AI recognises to detect chest movement. If a blanket covers the pattern, or the baby rolls to one side, tracking stops. In the app live view, you should see the pattern tracking indicator active over the baby's torso.

  2. Verify the camera is mounted directly overhead.

Nanit breathing monitoring only works from the top-down overhead view. If the camera was moved or is mounted at an angle, the pattern recognition will not work correctly. Ensure the camera is mounted vertically above the centre of the crib mattress.

  3. Check your Nanit subscription status.

Open the Nanit app → Account → Subscription. Breathing monitoring is part of the Nanit Insights subscription. If the subscription has expired or was cancelled, breathing data will not be shown. Renew the subscription to restore the feature.

  4. Update the Nanit app.

Open the App Store or Google Play Store and check for a Nanit app update. The breathing monitoring AI is updated through app updates — older versions may not detect the pattern correctly with newer band designs.

  5. Ensure the correct sized Breathing Wear is used.

Nanit Breathing Wear is sized by age/weight. If the band pattern is too small or too large relative to the camera's field of view at the mounted height, the algorithm cannot track it reliably. Check that you are using the size appropriate for your baby's current weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Nanit breathing monitoring alert me if the baby stops breathing?

Nanit's breathing monitoring tracks breathing rate and provides trend data but is not a medical alarm and is not FDA-approved as a medical device. It does not send alerts if breathing stops. It is a wellness tracking tool, not an apnoea monitor. For clinical monitoring, consult a paediatrician.

Can Nanit track breathing through normal baby clothing?

No. Nanit breathing monitoring requires the specific Nanit Breathing Wear (swaddle or sleeping bag) that has the trackable pattern printed on it. Regular baby clothing does not have this pattern and cannot be tracked.
