Breathing Wear Not Connected

Nanit Baby Monitor (Camera)

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Breathing Wear Not Connected means the Nanit camera cannot detect the breathing band or swaddle pattern. The Breathing Wear uses the camera to track breathing motions — it is not a separate sensor. Make sure the pattern is visible to the camera and the room has adequate lighting.

Affected Models

  • Nanit Pro
  • Nanit Plus

Common Causes

  • Breathing Wear pattern not visible to the camera (covered by blanket)
  • Room is too dark for the camera to see the pattern
  • Camera angle does not show the baby's chest area
  • Baby rolled onto stomach hiding the pattern
  • Breathing Wear is inside out (pattern on wrong side)

How to Fix It

  1. Make sure the Breathing Wear pattern faces the camera.

The unique pattern on the band or swaddle must be visible from above. The camera reads this pattern to detect breathing movement.

  2. Check camera positioning — it must see the baby's chest.

The camera should be mounted above the crib looking down. The baby's torso and the Breathing Wear pattern must be in frame.

  3. Make sure the room is not pitch black.

The camera needs some light (even night vision IR light) to see the pattern. Nanit's built-in night vision usually works, but check that nothing is blocking the camera's IR LEDs.

  4. Check that the Breathing Wear is not covered by a blanket.

A blanket over the baby's chest hides the pattern from the camera. Use a sleep sack instead of a blanket.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Nanit Breathing Wear work?

It does NOT have sensors. The swaddle/band has a unique printed pattern. The Nanit camera watches this pattern from above and detects the tiny movements caused by breathing. It is purely camera-based — no electronics in the clothing.

Can I use Breathing Wear with any camera?

No. Only the Nanit camera has the software to read the Breathing Wear pattern. It will not work with other baby cameras.
