Night Vision Not Working

Nanit Baby Monitor (Camera)

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

If the Nanit camera shows a black or very dark image at night, the infrared night vision LEDs may not be working, or something is blocking them. Check for obstructions near the camera lens and restart the camera.

Affected Models

  • Nanit Pro
  • Nanit Plus

Common Causes

  • IR LEDs not activating in dark conditions
  • Camera lens partially covered or obstructed
  • Reflective surface near the camera bouncing IR light back
  • Camera firmware bug
  • Camera hardware fault

How to Fix It

  1. Restart the camera by unplugging for 10 seconds.

This resets the night vision system and often fixes the issue.

  2. Check that nothing is covering the camera lens or IR LEDs.

The IR LEDs are around the camera lens. Dust, a protective film, or an object in the way can block them.

  3. Move the camera away from walls or reflective surfaces.

A wall or mirror too close to the camera reflects IR light back into the lens, washing out the image.

  4. Update the camera firmware through the Nanit app.

App > Settings > Camera > check for firmware updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the baby see the IR light?

No. Infrared light is invisible to human eyes — both adults and babies. Some cameras show a faint red glow from the IR LEDs, which is normal and harmless.

Is night vision as clear as daytime video?

Night vision is black and white and slightly less detailed than daytime colour video. This is normal for all IR night vision cameras.
