Red Notification

Owlet Baby Monitor (Smart Sock)

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

A red notification from the Owlet Smart Sock means the device detected an oxygen level or heart rate reading outside the preset range. Stay calm — check on your baby immediately. False alarms are common due to sock placement, but always check your baby first.

Affected Models

  • Owlet Smart Sock 3
  • Owlet Dream Sock
  • Owlet Smart Sock 2

Common Causes

  • Baby's oxygen level dropped below the preset threshold
  • Baby's heart rate went above or below the preset range
  • Sock is not positioned correctly on the baby's foot
  • Sock is too loose — not getting a good reading
  • Baby kicked the sock partially off during sleep

How to Fix It

  1. Check on your baby immediately.

Always check your baby first. Look for normal breathing, colour, and responsiveness. If your baby appears unwell, call emergency services.

  2. If baby is fine: reposition the sock on the foot.

The sensor window (green light) must sit on top of the foot, aligned with the pinky toe. Make sure the sock is snug but not too tight.

  3. Check that the sock size is correct for your baby's weight.

Using the wrong sock size causes inaccurate readings and false alarms. Owlet provides sizing guides based on baby's weight.

  4. Make sure the base station is within Bluetooth range.

The base station should be within 30 feet of the sock with no thick walls between them. Weak connection can cause delayed or inaccurate readings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How common are false alarms with the Owlet?

Relatively common. Poor sock placement, a sock that is too loose, or a baby who moves a lot can all trigger false red notifications. Most parents report occasional false alarms, especially when the baby is very active.

Is the Owlet a medical device?

No. The Owlet Smart Sock is classified as a consumer wellness product, not a medical device. It should not replace medical monitoring or professional medical advice.
