Interference / Static

VTech Baby Monitor

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Static or interference on a VTech baby monitor is usually caused by other wireless devices operating on similar frequencies. Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, and microwaves are common culprits. Move the monitor away from other electronics and try changing the channel.

Affected Models

  • VTech VM5255
  • VTech VM5263
  • VTech VM350
  • VTech VM901
  • Most VTech baby monitors

Common Causes

  • Wi-Fi router too close to the baby or parent unit
  • Cordless phone on the same frequency
  • Microwave oven in use (2.4 GHz interference)
  • Multiple baby monitors in the same area
  • Other 2.4 GHz devices (Bluetooth, wireless cameras)

How to Fix It

  1. Move the baby unit at least 3 feet from the Wi-Fi router.

Wi-Fi routers are the biggest source of interference for baby monitors. More distance = less interference.

  2. Change the monitor's channel.

Most VTech monitors have a channel button. Cycle through channels until you find one with clear reception.

  3. Switch your Wi-Fi router to 5 GHz if possible.

5 GHz Wi-Fi does not interfere with baby monitors (which typically use 2.4 GHz or DECT). Move your phone and laptop to the 5 GHz band.

  4. Move the parent unit to a different location.

Sometimes the parent unit is near an interference source. Try placing it in a different room or on a different surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does DECT technology reduce interference?

Yes. DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) uses frequencies reserved for voice devices, separate from Wi-Fi. DECT monitors have less interference than older analog monitors.

Can my neighbour's baby monitor interfere with mine?

Possibly, if they are using the same frequency and channel. Changing your monitor's channel usually resolves this.
