AUX Input Not Working
Bose Bluetooth Speaker
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Bose speaker AUX input not working is usually caused by using a mono (2-band) cable instead of a stereo (3-band) cable, the input source volume being too low, or the speaker not switching to AUX mode when the cable is inserted. A standard 3.5mm stereo cable (TRS — tip, ring, sleeve) is required.
Affected Models
- Bose SoundLink Color II / III
- Bose SoundLink Revolve / Revolve+
- Bose SoundLink Mini II
- Bose Home Speaker 300 / 500
Common Causes
- Using a mono (2-band) 3.5mm cable — AUX input requires a stereo TRS cable
- Source device volume too low — the output level from the phone or player is too weak
- AUX cable dirty or damaged — oxidised contacts cause intermittent or no audio
- Speaker not detecting the cable insertion — jack socket contaminated with lint or debris
- Source device routing audio to the phone speaker rather than the AUX output
How to Fix It
-
Confirm you are using a stereo TRS cable.
A stereo 3.5mm cable has two black rings on the plug (three bands: tip, ring, sleeve). A mono cable has one black ring (two bands). Using a mono cable on a stereo AUX input produces no audio or audio in one channel only.
-
Set the source volume to at least 75%.
When using AUX input, the source device volume directly controls the Bose speaker volume. If the phone or music player is at 10–20% volume, the output is very quiet. Set the source to 75%+ and use the Bose speaker volume to fine-tune.
-
Clean the AUX socket.
Use a dry wooden toothpick or a blast of compressed air to clear lint and debris from the AUX socket. Pocket lint is the most common cause of unreliable AUX detection — it prevents the cable from seating fully and making contact.
-
Check that the speaker has switched to AUX mode.
When a cable is inserted, some Bose models announce 'AUX input' and switch automatically. If no announcement occurs, check that the cable is fully inserted (you should feel a slight click). The speaker must be playing or in standby — not powered off — for AUX to activate.
-
Try a different cable.
AUX cables fail more often than expected — especially cheaper cables where the strain relief cracks and the wire breaks internally at the plug. Test with a known-good cable to rule out a cable fault.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I charge my Bose speaker and use AUX at the same time?
Yes, charging and AUX audio work simultaneously on Bose speakers that have separate charge and AUX ports. On models that use a single charging cable (USB-C), the AUX input is a separate 3.5mm jack and both can be used at the same time.
Does the Bose speaker AUX input work with a laptop?
Yes. Connect a standard 3.5mm TRS cable from the laptop's headphone output to the Bose AUX input. Set the laptop's audio output to the built-in headphone jack (not Bluetooth) and set the volume to 70–80%.
