Bass Too Low

Bose Bluetooth Speaker

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Bose speaker with weak or thin bass is usually caused by a flat surface placement that reduces bass resonance, volume being too low for bass frequencies to register, or the EQ setting being set to a flat or voice-optimised profile. Placing the speaker on a hard flat surface near a wall noticeably improves bass output.

Affected Models

  • Bose SoundLink Flex
  • Bose SoundLink Revolve / Revolve+
  • Bose SoundLink Color II / III
  • Bose SoundLink Max
  • Bose Portable Smart Speaker

Common Causes

  • Speaker placed in the open — bass benefits from boundary reinforcement near walls or on hard surfaces
  • Low volume — bass frequencies need higher volume levels to be perceived
  • EQ or voice mode enabled — reduces bass for voice clarity
  • Bass module disconnected on systems with a separate Acoustimass bass module
  • Firmware update changed default EQ settings

How to Fix It

  1. Place the speaker on a hard surface near a wall.

Bass output from Bose SoundLink speakers improves significantly when placed on a hard, flat surface (table, shelf) within 30–60 cm of a wall. The wall provides acoustic reinforcement for low frequencies. Avoid placing speakers on carpet or soft furniture.

  2. Use the Bose Music app to adjust the EQ.

Open the Bose Music app → your speaker → Settings → EQ (or Sound Control). If a voice or flat EQ preset is selected, switch to a bass-heavy preset or manually increase the low-frequency setting. Not all Bose models support EQ adjustment in the app.

  3. Turn up the volume.

Bass frequencies are the first to disappear at low volumes — this is a property of human hearing (the Fletcher-Munson curve), not a speaker fault. Try listening at 50–70% volume. The bass response will be noticeably fuller than at 20–30%.

  4. Disable voice or podcast modes if enabled.

Some Bose speakers and the Bose Music app offer a voice or podcast optimisation mode that cuts bass to improve speech clarity. If this mode is on, switch back to music mode for fuller bass response.

  5. Reset the speaker to factory settings.

A firmware update can change the default EQ profile to a flatter setting. Factory reset restores original settings: on most Bose SoundLink models, hold the Power button for 10 seconds until you hear 'your settings have been cleared'.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Bose speaker sound better on a table than in my hand?

On a hard surface, the table acts as an acoustic amplifier and bass reflector. Holding the speaker in the air or placing it on carpet removes this reinforcement, producing a thinner, less bass-heavy sound. This is normal and expected.

Can a Bose speaker be damaged by too much bass boost?

No — Bose speakers have built-in limiter circuits that prevent the drivers from being driven beyond safe levels even at maximum bass and volume settings. The speaker will reduce the signal internally before the driver is damaged.
