Bluetooth Keeps Switching to a Different Device

Bose Bluetooth Speaker

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Bose speaker switching Bluetooth devices is caused by another previously paired device coming in range and auto-connecting. The Bose speaker connects to the last two devices it used — any of those devices can reconnect if they come in range while the speaker is on.

Affected Models

  • Bose SoundLink Flex
  • Bose SoundLink Max
  • Bose SoundLink Color II
  • Bose Portable Smart Speaker
  • All Bose Bluetooth speakers

Common Causes

  • Another paired phone, tablet, or laptop coming in range and auto-connecting — Bose remembers up to 8 devices
  • Multipoint mode connecting two devices simultaneously — audio switches to whichever device is making noise
  • Bose speaker auto-connecting to the last connected device when powered on — interrupting your current playback
  • Nearby device's Bluetooth enabled and 'available' — old Bose pairing triggers reconnect
  • Family member's phone previously paired to the speaker auto-connecting when they enter the room

How to Fix It

  1. Identify and disconnect the interfering device.

When the speaker switches unexpectedly, check which device it connected to — the speaker voice prompt says the connected device name (e.g., 'Connected to John's iPhone'). On the interfering device, go to Bluetooth settings → find the Bose speaker → tap Disconnect or Forget. Disabling Bluetooth on the interfering device when not in use prevents it from auto-connecting.

  2. Clear the Bose speaker's pairing list.

Power on the speaker and press and hold the Bluetooth button until you hear a tone — this clears all stored pairings on most Bose models. After clearing, re-pair only the devices you want to use. A shorter pairing list means fewer devices competing to auto-connect.

  3. Understand and manage Bose Multipoint.

Bose Multipoint allows two devices to be connected simultaneously — audio switches to whichever device starts playing. If Multipoint is enabled and another paired device starts a notification sound or video, the speaker may switch to that device. In the Bose Music app, go to your speaker → Settings → Bluetooth → disable Multipoint if you only want one active device at a time.

  4. Ask family members to forget the speaker on their devices.

If family members' phones were previously paired to the speaker, they will auto-connect whenever they come within range. Ask them to go to their phone's Bluetooth settings and select Forget or Unpair for the Bose speaker. They can always re-pair later when they want to use it — forgetting just removes the automatic reconnect behavior.

  5. Set connection priority in the Bose Music app.

In the Bose Music app → your speaker → Bluetooth settings, review the paired device list. Remove any devices you no longer want to auto-connect by selecting them and choosing Forget Device. Keeping only 2–3 devices in the pairing list gives you clearer control over which device the speaker connects to when powered on.

When to Call a Professional

Bose Bluetooth connection management is handled by the speaker firmware. If auto-switching cannot be controlled through the pairing list, contact Bose support.
