Multipoint / Dual Device Connection Not Working
Bose Bluetooth Speaker
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Bose multipoint (connecting two devices simultaneously) requires the feature to be enabled in the Bose Music app — it is off by default on some models. Open the Bose Music app > Settings > Connections and enable Multipoint. Both devices must have previously been paired to the speaker before multipoint can work.
Affected Models
- Bose SoundLink Flex
- Bose SoundLink Max
- Bose SoundLink Revolve+
- Bose Portable Smart Speaker
- Bose QuietComfort Ultra Speaker
Common Causes
- Multipoint not enabled in Bose Music app — it is disabled by default
- One of the two devices was never paired to the speaker before
- Speaker firmware outdated — multipoint was added in later firmware versions
- Third device connected and displacing one of the multipoint devices
- Previous active connection not properly ended before trying multipoint
How to Fix It
-
Enable Multipoint in the Bose Music app.
Connect to the speaker in the Bose Music app. Go to Settings > Connections (or Bluetooth Connections). Toggle Multipoint or Dual Device Connection to ON. This setting is off by default and must be manually enabled the first time.
-
Pre-pair both devices to the speaker.
Before multipoint will work, both devices must already be in the speaker's Bluetooth pairing list. Pair Device 1 and disconnect it. Then pair Device 2. Now reconnect Device 1 — both should connect simultaneously in multipoint mode.
-
Update the speaker firmware.
Multipoint support was added via firmware updates on several Bose models. Open the Bose Music app, go to Settings > Software Updates, and install any available updates. After updating, re-enable Multipoint in the connection settings.
-
Disconnect any third device.
Bose multipoint supports exactly two simultaneous connections. If a third device attempts to connect (e.g., a tablet previously paired), it can displace one of the multipoint devices. In the Bose Music app, check the connected devices list and remove any unwanted connections.
-
Test audio switching between devices.
With multipoint active and both devices connected, play audio from Device 1. Then play audio from Device 2 — the speaker should automatically switch. If only one device plays, the second device may have connected in standard mode rather than the multipoint slot. Disconnect and reconnect the second device.
When to Call a Professional
Multipoint is a firmware feature — no hardware service is needed. Check the Bose website to confirm your specific model supports multipoint connectivity.
