Voice Prompts Not Working / Silent Connections
Bose Bluetooth Speaker
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Bose voice prompts (the spoken announcements like 'Device connected' or battery level) can be muted or disabled in the Bose Music app. Open the app, go to Settings and check the Voice Prompts or Voice Alerts toggle. A factory reset also re-enables voice prompts if they were disabled through another method.
Affected Models
- Bose SoundLink Flex
- Bose SoundLink Max
- Bose SoundLink Color II
- Bose SoundLink Revolve+
- Bose SoundLink Mini II
Common Causes
- Voice prompts disabled in the Bose Music app settings
- Speaker volume too low — prompts play but are inaudible
- Firmware update reset the voice prompt language to a non-default setting
- Speaker in a mode where prompts are suppressed (e.g. during active audio)
- Factory reset needed to restore default voice prompt settings
How to Fix It
-
Check the Voice Prompts setting in the Bose Music app.
Open the Bose Music app and connect to the speaker. Go to Settings > Voice Prompts (or Voice Alerts on some models). Toggle the setting on if it is off. This is the most common reason voice prompts stop working.
-
Raise the volume before disconnecting.
Voice prompts use the speaker's current volume level. If the volume is very low (below 10%), the connection announcement plays but is inaudible. Raise the volume to at least 30% and test by pressing the Bluetooth button or power button to trigger a prompt.
-
Check the voice prompt language.
After a firmware update, the voice prompt language may reset to a default that is different from your preference. In the Bose Music app, go to Settings > Language and confirm the correct language is selected. An unexpected language can make prompts seem absent if you do not recognise the words.
-
Trigger a manual voice prompt test.
With the speaker on, press the power button once (do not hold — just a short press). The speaker should announce the battery level. If no sound is heard and volume is adequate, voice prompts are disabled at the firmware level.
-
Factory reset the speaker.
A factory reset restores all default settings including voice prompt defaults. For most Bose SoundLink models: hold the power button for 10 seconds until you hear the reset confirmation tone. After the reset, reconnect to the Bose Music app — voice prompts should work immediately.
When to Call a Professional
Voice prompts are a firmware feature — no hardware repair is needed. If prompts are enabled in the app but still not audible after a factory reset, contact Bose support.
