Bass Boost Not Working

JBL Bluetooth Speaker

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

JBL bass boost is controlled in the JBL Portable app — not a physical button. Open the app, select your speaker, and toggle Bass Boost under Sound Settings. If the toggle is greyed out, update the speaker firmware.

Affected Models

  • JBL Charge 5
  • JBL Flip 6 / Flip 7
  • JBL Xtreme 3 / Xtreme 4
  • JBL Boombox 3
  • JBL Go 4

Common Causes

  • Bass Boost disabled in JBL Portable app
  • Outdated firmware — feature added in a later update
  • App not connected to the speaker
  • EQ settings in the music app overriding JBL settings
  • Feature not available on older JBL models

How to Fix It

  1. Open the JBL Portable app and connect to the speaker.

The app is available for iOS and Android. The speaker must be powered on and connected via Bluetooth to the same phone.

  2. Navigate to the speaker settings and find Bass Boost.

Tap your speaker tile → Settings (gear icon) → Sound → Bass Boost. Toggle it on.

  3. Update the speaker firmware if Bass Boost is missing.

Some firmware versions do not include the Bass Boost feature. In the app go to Settings → Firmware Update and install any available update.

  4. Disable the EQ in your music app.

Equalizer settings in Spotify, Apple Music, or your phone's system EQ can counteract bass boost. Turn off any custom EQ in your music app and test again.

  5. Check your speaker model's feature list.

Older JBL models (Flip 4, Charge 3, Go 2) do not support app-controlled Bass Boost. The feature requires Connect+ or PartyBoost compatible models.

When to Call a Professional

Bass Boost is a software feature. If it is absent from the app entirely on a supported model, contact JBL support as the firmware may need a manual reflash.
