Charging Slowly / Long Charge Time

JBL Bluetooth Speaker

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

JBL speaker charging slowly is almost always caused by using a low-wattage USB charger or a charging cable that is not fully seated. Use the USB-C cable and at least a 10W USB adapter — the original JBL charger provides the correct output.

Affected Models

  • JBL Charge 5
  • JBL Flip 6
  • JBL Xtreme 3
  • JBL Boombox 3
  • JBL Pulse 5
  • JBL Clip 4

Common Causes

  • USB power adapter wattage too low — a 5W phone charger charges a JBL very slowly
  • USB cable not fully seated in the charging port or speaker port
  • Charging while playing at high volume — the speaker draws more power than it receives
  • USB cable faulty or a charge-only cable without full current capacity
  • Battery fully depleted — takes additional time to begin showing a charge increase

How to Fix It

  1. Use a USB-C adapter of at least 10W.

JBL Charge 5 and similar models require a USB-C adapter rated at 10W or higher for normal charging speed. A 5W USB-A phone charger will charge the speaker very slowly — often 8+ hours instead of 4. Use the adapter that came with the speaker, or a USB-C PD adapter rated 18W for fastest charging.

  2. Check the cable connection at both ends.

Firmly reseat the USB-C cable at both the wall adapter and the speaker's charging port. A cable that appears plugged in but is seated at an angle may only deliver a fraction of the available current. Try a different USB-C cable to rule out a faulty or underpowered cable.

  3. Do not use the speaker while charging.

Playing the speaker at high volume while charging causes the speaker to draw more power than the charger can supply, resulting in a net negative charge rate or very slow gains. Turn the speaker off or set volume to zero while it charges for the fastest charge time.

  4. Allow extra time for a fully depleted battery.

A completely discharged JBL battery may take 15–30 minutes before the charging LED activates and the battery percentage begins to rise. Leave it connected and do not disconnect — the charger is working even before the LED turns on.

  5. Clean the charging port.

Lint and debris in the USB-C port prevent the cable from seating fully, reducing charging current. Use a dry toothpick to gently remove any debris from the port. Do not use metal objects or liquids inside the port.

When to Call a Professional

If the JBL shows a charging indicator but the battery percentage does not increase after 2 hours with a confirmed good cable and adapter, the battery or charging circuit may be faulty. Contact JBL support.
