Connect+ Not Working

JBL Bluetooth Speaker

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

JBL Connect+ links multiple JBL speakers together for amplified audio. If it is not working, both speakers must support the same linking technology — Connect+ and PartyBoost are not compatible with each other. Update the firmware on both speakers via the JBL Portable app and try again.

Affected Models

  • JBL Charge 4
  • JBL Flip 5
  • JBL Pulse 3
  • JBL Xtreme 2
  • All Connect+-compatible JBL models

Common Causes

  • Mixing Connect+ and PartyBoost speakers (incompatible)
  • Outdated firmware on one or both speakers
  • Speakers too far apart during linking
  • Bluetooth interference from other devices
  • One speaker already paired to another device

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm both speakers use the same linking technology.

Connect+ is for older JBL speakers (Charge 4, Flip 5, Xtreme 2). PartyBoost is for newer speakers (Charge 5, Flip 6, Xtreme 3). They cannot be linked together.

  2. Make sure both speakers are paired to the same phone.

Connect+ requires the source phone to be connected to both speakers. Pair the second speaker to the same phone first.

  3. Update the firmware on both speakers via the JBL Portable app.

Open the JBL Portable app → select each speaker → Settings → Firmware Update. Firmware bugs have caused linking failures in older versions.

  4. Keep both speakers within 3 metres of each other during linking.

The Connect+ handshake can fail if the speakers are too far apart. Once linked, you can move them further apart.

  5. Reset both speakers and re-pair from scratch.

Hold volume-up and play together for 5 seconds on each speaker to factory reset. Re-pair both to the phone, then attempt to link again.

When to Call a Professional

If Connect+ still fails after firmware updates and the speakers are known-compatible models, one unit may have a Bluetooth hardware fault. Contact JBL support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I link a JBL Charge 4 and a JBL Charge 5 together?

No. JBL Charge 4 uses Connect+ and JBL Charge 5 uses PartyBoost. These two technologies are not compatible and cannot be linked.

How do I activate JBL Connect+?

Press the Connect+ button (speaker icon with a + sign) on each speaker you want to link. Both speakers must be paired to the same phone and within range of each other.
