Multipoint Not Working / Dual Connection Failing
JBL Bluetooth Speaker
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
JBL multipoint not working is usually caused by the speaker being in single-device mode or by one device not supporting Bluetooth multipoint properly. Check the JBL Portable app to confirm multipoint is enabled and both devices are paired in the speaker's memory.
Affected Models
- JBL Charge 5
- JBL Flip 6
- JBL Xtreme 3
- JBL Boombox 3
- JBL PartyBox On-The-Go
Common Causes
- Multipoint not enabled in the JBL Portable app — feature defaults to off on some models
- Both devices trying to connect at the same time and conflicting during the handshake
- One device does not support Bluetooth multipoint as the connecting device
- Speaker still in single-device pairing mode from a previous session
- Speaker connected to two devices but only one is passing audio — looks like multipoint failure
How to Fix It
-
Enable multipoint in the JBL Portable app.
Open the JBL Portable app, select your speaker, and go to Speaker Settings. Look for a Multipoint or Connect 2 Devices toggle and enable it. Multipoint is disabled by default on some JBL models and must be explicitly turned on.
-
Connect devices one at a time.
After enabling multipoint, connect the first device via Bluetooth and wait for it to show as connected. Then connect the second device — do not try to connect both at the same moment. Sequential connection prevents the handshake conflict that causes multipoint setup to fail.
-
Ensure both devices are in the speaker's pairing memory.
Both devices must have been previously paired to the speaker and exist in its pairing memory list. If a device is new, pair it with the speaker first in single-device mode, disconnect, then set up multipoint with both devices. Devices not in the pairing list cannot join a multipoint session.
-
Factory reset the speaker's Bluetooth memory.
Hold the Bluetooth button and the Volume - button simultaneously for 5 seconds (or follow the reset sequence for your model) to clear all Bluetooth pairings. Re-pair both devices from scratch, then set up multipoint. A fresh pairing often resolves multipoint failures caused by corrupted pairing data.
-
Check which device is active when both are connected.
When multipoint is working correctly, the speaker plays audio from whichever device is currently sending it. If only one device ever plays audio, the other device may not support the correct Bluetooth profile for audio streaming alongside multipoint. Test with a different second device to narrow down the compatibility.
When to Call a Professional
Multipoint is a software feature — no hardware repair is needed. Contact JBL support if multipoint is listed as supported for your model but the option does not appear in the app.
