Voice Prompts Not Playing

JBL Bluetooth Speaker

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

JBL speaker voice prompts (battery level, pairing status) are enabled or disabled in the JBL Portable app. Open the app, select your speaker, and check that voice prompts are turned on under Settings. A factory reset will restore them to enabled by default.

Affected Models

  • JBL Charge 5
  • JBL Flip 6 / Flip 7
  • JBL Xtreme 3 / Xtreme 4
  • JBL Boombox 3
  • JBL Go 4

Common Causes

  • Voice prompts disabled in the JBL Portable app
  • Speaker volume too low to hear the prompt at startup
  • Outdated firmware with a voice-prompt bug
  • Language set to wrong language in the app
  • Speaker in a mode that suppresses announcements

How to Fix It

  1. Open the JBL Portable app and enable voice prompts.

Tap your speaker → Settings → Voice Prompts and toggle them on. This setting is saved on the speaker and persists across restarts.

  2. Increase speaker volume before powering on.

The startup battery-level announcement plays at the stored volume. If the volume was set very low, the prompt plays silently. Turn the volume up, power off and back on.

  3. Update the speaker firmware.

Voice prompt bugs have been fixed in firmware updates. In the JBL Portable app go to Settings → Firmware Update.

  4. Change the voice prompt language in the app.

If voice prompts are set to the wrong language they can seem absent. In the app go to Settings → Voice Prompt Language and set it to your preferred language.

  5. Factory reset the speaker.

Hold volume-up and play for 5 seconds until the speaker resets. A factory reset restores voice prompts to enabled. Re-pair the speaker after the reset.

When to Call a Professional

If voice prompts are enabled in the app but still silent, the speaker's announcement audio circuit may be faulty. Contact JBL support.
