Not Working After Water
JBL Bluetooth Speaker
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
JBL speakers are rated IPX7 waterproof (submersible to 1 meter for 30 minutes), but damage can still occur if the rubber port covers are open, the speaker was already damaged, or it was submerged deeper or longer than rated. Allow the speaker to dry for 48–72 hours before testing — do not charge it while wet.
Affected Models
- JBL Charge 5
- JBL Flip 6
- JBL Xtreme 3
- JBL Clip 4
- JBL Go 3
- JBL Boombox 3
Common Causes
- Charging port cover not fully sealed before water exposure
- Saltwater or chlorinated pool water — more corrosive than fresh water
- Water depth or duration exceeded the IPX7 rating
- Speaker used while already having a crack or wear on the seal
- Condensation from temperature changes (cold speaker brought into humid room)
How to Fix It
-
Do not charge the speaker — keep it unplugged.
Charging a wet speaker can cause a short circuit that permanently damages the battery or charging circuit. Leave the USB port cover open if it is a rubber flap type, and do not connect any cables.
-
Shake out visible water.
Hold the speaker with the grille facing down and gently shake to let gravity pull water out of the driver area. Press the grille lightly and quickly a few times to help expel water from inside the driver cavity.
-
Dry in a warm, ventilated area.
Place the JBL in a warm room (not in direct sunlight, not in an oven) with the grille facing down for 48–72 hours. Good airflow is more important than heat. Do not use a hairdryer on the speaker — the heat can warp the plastic or damage the driver.
-
Play audio at low volume to clear water from the driver.
After 24 hours of initial drying, play music at 20% volume to help vibrate residual moisture out of the driver assembly. You should hear the wet crackling/distortion gradually improve if water is the cause. Stop and wait longer if distortion is severe.
-
Rinse with fresh water if saltwater or chlorine was involved.
Saltwater and pool water leave conductive mineral deposits as they dry, which accelerate corrosion. If the speaker was exposed to salt or chlorinated water, rinse it with clean fresh water (it is IPX7 rated) and then dry thoroughly. This removes the corrosive residue before it can damage internal components.
When to Call a Professional
If the speaker shows no signs of life after 72 hours of drying, corrosion may have damaged the main circuit board. Contact JBL support for a warranty evaluation — note that liquid damage may void warranty depending on how it occurred.
