Not Charging

HP HP Calculator

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

HP calculator not charging is usually caused by a damaged USB cable, a dirty charging port, or a battery that has been fully depleted and needs a slow charge to recover. The HP Prime uses a standard micro-USB cable (G1) or USB-C cable (G2). Try a different cable and a 5V wall charger rather than a computer USB port.

Affected Models

  • HP Prime G1 (micro-USB charging)
  • HP Prime G2 (USB-C charging)
  • HP 39gs (mini-USB charging)
  • HP 40gs

Common Causes

  • USB cable is a charge-only cable without data wires — HP Prime requires a data-capable cable
  • Computer USB port in low-power state — not delivering enough current to charge
  • Charging port on the calculator dirty or damaged
  • Battery fully depleted and requires a minimum trickle before the charging indicator appears
  • HP Prime firmware bug on older versions — fixed with a firmware update

How to Fix It

  1. Try a 5V wall charger instead of a computer USB port.

Computer USB ports can provide as little as 100 mA in low-power mode, which is not enough to charge the HP Prime from a depleted state. Use a phone charger (5V, 1A or higher) for reliable charging.

  2. Try a different USB cable.

The HP Prime G1 uses micro-USB; the G2 uses USB-C. Not all cables are data cables — some are charge-only and will not work correctly. Try the original HP cable or a cable you know works for data transfer.

  3. Clean the charging port.

Lint and debris inside the micro-USB or USB-C port prevents the cable from making full contact. Use a dry wooden toothpick or a single burst of compressed air to clear the port. Do not use metal objects.

  4. Leave on charge for 2+ hours if fully depleted.

A fully depleted HP Prime battery may show nothing on the screen for the first 30–60 minutes of charging. Leave it connected to a wall charger for at least 2 hours before concluding there is a fault.

  5. Update the HP Prime firmware.

Some early HP Prime G1 units had a firmware bug that caused charging to stop. Connect via HP Prime Virtual Calculator (or HP Connectivity Kit) and update to the latest firmware. The update can be applied even when the battery is low.

When to Call a Professional

If the calculator does not charge at all after trying multiple cables and a wall charger for 2 hours, the battery or internal charging circuit may need professional service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to fully charge an HP Prime from empty?

A fully depleted HP Prime typically takes 3–4 hours to charge fully using a 1A wall charger. Using a 0.5A computer USB port can take 6–8 hours.

Which HP calculators use replaceable batteries vs. rechargeable?

The HP 12C, HP 35s, and HP 50g use standard replaceable AAA or AAAA batteries. The HP Prime (G1 and G2) has a built-in rechargeable lithium battery. The HP 39gii uses 3 AAA batteries.
