Programs Lost / Memory Cleared After Reset

HP HP Calculator

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

HP calculator programs are lost after a full reset or battery removal because they are stored in volatile RAM. For the HP 50g, use an SD card to back up programs before any battery change. For the HP Prime, use HP Prime Virtual Calculator on a PC to back up .hpprgm program files via USB.

Affected Models

  • HP 50g
  • HP Prime G1
  • HP Prime G2
  • HP 35s
  • HP 48G series

Common Causes

  • Full (cold) reset performed — all RAM cleared
  • Batteries removed completely before replacement — no backup power
  • Battery died completely before being replaced — RAM lost
  • Battery contacts corroded, causing momentary power interruption and RAM clear
  • Factory reset performed through calculator settings

How to Fix It

  1. Back up HP 50g programs to SD card.

The HP 50g has a microSD card slot on the top. Insert a microSD card and from the FILER application, copy your programs and data from main memory (port 0) to the card (port 3). The SD card retains data without power — it is unaffected by battery changes or resets.

  2. Back up HP Prime programs via PC.

Connect the HP Prime to a PC via USB. Open HP Prime Virtual Calculator (free download from HP). From the Content section, drag programs from the calculator to the PC. Store the .hpprgm files in a safe folder — they can be dragged back to the calculator at any time to restore.

  3. Restore HP 50g programs from SD card.

After a battery change or reset that cleared memory, insert the SD card, open FILER, and copy programs from the card back to main memory. All your custom programs are restored in minutes without re-entering code.

  4. Use flash memory for permanent storage on HP 50g.

The HP 50g has internal flash memory (port 2) that survives full resets and battery removal. Store critical programs in port 2: in the FILER, move programs from port 0 to port 2. Flash-stored programs persist indefinitely without power.

  5. Change batteries quickly to preserve HP 50g RAM.

HP 50g RAM is maintained by the main batteries — there is no separate backup battery. To minimise data loss during battery changes, have the new batteries ready before removing the old ones. Swap all four AAA batteries within 30 seconds to retain program memory.

When to Call a Professional

Recovering lost programs from a reset HP calculator is not possible — the data is permanently erased from RAM once power is lost. Prevention through regular backup is the only solution.
